Hang the rod just below the ceiling.

Extend the rod beyond the window trim, so when they are open, they reveal the window trim. Looks fuller and doesn't close out the natural light.

It can be anywhere from 2" above the trim to the ceiling. It's preference, but I like it about halfway. Will the curtains be custom or readymade? If custom, mount the rod before you measure for curtains. If readymade, the length of the curtains may dictate where the rod needs to go. You don't want them more than 1/2" from the floor, preferably 1/4".

Curtains should not reveal the side trim and in fact should be at least an inch into the glass, otherwise they look like wall panels rather than window curtains IMO. I know some may like this look but I find it odd looking.

You have beautiful top casings. To make the most of them no more than 2" above..other wise everyone will be looking at the odd gap between them and the rod.

Thanks @shadylady2u. That is exactly the advice I was looking for. The curtains are ready made but I'm ordering extra long so I can hem them to the length I need.

Why drapes at all? Maybe some info as to what room this is and a picture of the whole room.IMO no drpaes just a blind inside mount if possible .
