Have an overall plan of how you are going update all the rooms before you start so it looks cohesive and not disjointed when you are thru.

When you say you are starting in the entry way, do you plan to carry the decorative moulding application style through the entire first floor? If so, the style will need to be compatible with the other rooms, like how will it transition from the entry to the living room and beyond.

Start by choosing a trim style and trim out the sheet rocked entry opening to the living room.

Maybe you'll use the existing trim moulding style you already have in the foyer, or remove it and create a new style that works with the decorative pattern you plan to use.

I like this example, not going all all the way to the ceiling in the foyer, so you can paint the wall above the moulding in a complimentary color.

If you Google the word ’wainscoting’ you could get lots of pictures of what I think you have in mind. Then you could show us and we could give advice.

I honestly don't believe you have the right layout in your entry to add molding. There's no place for symmetry or balance. You have lots of openings on the bottom portion of the wall and vast amounts of open wall space on the upper portions. If you look at the example you posted, every piece of upper molding is balanced by a lower piece. In your case, you would have only a few lower, thinner sections with multiple sections above it. I don't think you'd be happy with the end result. I would spend the money, instead, on modernizing your stair rails and spindles, if that's what you meant by updating the staircase. That alone will be quite an expensive fix.

^ totally agree - can you remove the carpeting from the stairs or if not, what about something more stylish? A subtle beige antelope print would be great or maybe something more bold - there are some pretty terrific options out there
