It depends on what the rug is made of. If wool, it could clean up.

If polypropylene, maybe not. I had 2 polypropylene Safavieh runner rugs, a lighter color, and they won't clean up for me. I took them on the driveway and scrubbed with water and a brush (can't remember what cleaning product), and they didn't look a bit better but they did dry quickly. I talked to a rug cleaning business, and he didn't seem too enthusiastic about the results of professional cleaning the poly rugs.

I would talk with your potential rug cleaning company about the material used in the rug and the possibility of success. You could even call another company to compare responses. Maybe others here will have additional information. I replaced my very dirty rugs with Safavieh wool, brown! The runners will go in the trash, and I feel bad about that. What a waste, landfill rugs. :-(
