Dreary Office Space

This is my office space above our warehouse. Dull and utilitarian, no windows. As a landscape designer, I would like a more inspiring environment. The rules are that I can't take anything out (paint scheme, drafting table, and desk have to stay), I can only add to what is there. I like the dark olive green accent wall (love anything green, of course!), but the yellowy-tan walls are dreary. We have that color throughout the office, so it has to stay, unfortunately.

The bulletin board, coat hooks, and accessories can be changed. I can hang things on the walls or from the ceiling, but I'll probably have to do the work myself. Luckily I'm very handy!

Any ideas?

The space between the countertop and the cabinets is a cloth-covered (same color as the walls) bulletin board as well. My chair is a standard black desk chair.

Could you do a peel and stick wallpaper in a garden pattern that appeals to you? Maybe something with a nod to the olive walls and black desk to tie it all in.

Get a lamp for your drafting table, or if that doesn't work for you get a floor lamp. Your space is only dreary because you have harsh light. Then I'd put up some art that you like. And since you like plants, maybe get a plant for above your cabinet.

    Love the above suggestion!

    Or some great art.

I don't know what kind of chair you have, but could you add some peel and stick carpet tiles, or a runner with some great color on the floor?

Another suggestion....framed gallery of your landscaping projects.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors I'm an employee, not an owner so I cannot make changes to the building. The tan color wraps around to the hallways on both sides and all the other offices, so I can't change it.

@bowser24, Yes, I can do peel and stick wallpaper or stickers! Any favorite sites you can recommend?

Ah! Sorry, you said "our warehouse" so I thought that meant you owned it. Really your only options then are to ask the owner to put in better lighting for you, particularly over your drafting table.

I don't know your location, try Home depot for peel and stick paper.

removable wallpaper, "renters wallpaper", change the color of the florescent bulbs to warm, and add a desk lamp for task work. pothos, and other "no" light plants, floating shelves perhaps a wall-mounted lamp beside the drafting table.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors, understandable. Sorry for the confusion.

More greens! As in nature - all greens seem to work together. Im thinking of doing my own space in greens, plus some version of a light sky blue for ceiling . I havent found exact colors yet so I cant really suggest anything. I'm no help at all am I! Look into full spectrum florescent tubes which more closely replicate sunlight as is used for light therapy (not the same as "daylight" which only designates color temperature).

I have a couple of extra black screen panels like these. Any ideas for using them?

Put the screen on your coat wall.

Then you can add hooks on top of that.

@Debbie Downer Oh, I like the idea of full spectrum bulbs. I will search that.

I dont think adding more to the space is a good idea outside of a lamp, bc the space is so small.

Love the idea of peel and stick wall paper with a foliage or floral print! Since you like the darker olive green wall and don't like the tan walls, I'd try using the wallpaper on the tan walls. If those screens are a metal material then it may work to tuck beside the drafting table and use magnets for notes etc?

As has been said in comments also, lighting will make a huge impact on this space and is a must change. Would much prefer some type of desk lap to an overhead ceiling light of course, but either way try to get the actual light as soft and close to natural light as possible.

I'd love to see an upgrade to the cork board too, either by simply painting over it matching an accent colour in the wallpaper or black to go along with the cabinets, or if you decide not to add wallpaper to that wall, i would consider adding some fabric to it covering the cork and also painting/staining the frame.

Last but definitely not least, add all the plants you can!! especially on the top of your cabinets, maybe even letting some trail down the side of the cabinet. If you can't find real ones that are conducive to growing in your office, there are so many amazing faux plant options out there that look just like the real thing.

    Hope that helps!

Not a change to the space itself, but a way of working. Do you get regular breaks? If so try to take them in natural light, preferably outside.

Well, that’s good news. Being outdoors makes a huge difference to mood. A windowless office, however nicely decorated, would be awful If you were stuck in there all day.
