Thoughts on Paul Ricault?

This is the last year that I get to order a bunch of roses to try in my garden....then I'll spend a a few years caring for them and watching how they do before I consider any more. So...I've been pouring through old posts here and HMF looking at roses that have been on my consider list this past year.

Paul Ricault is one of those. It took my breath away at the local rose garden last May--the fragrance was incredible and the huge, romantic, old fashioned blooms just covered the plant. We'd had several days of cool rain and many roses in the park were brown mushes, but not Paul Ricault--it was fabulous. It seems like a must for any OGR lover.

Do any of you grow it? If so, how large should I expect it to get? How is it on disease resistance? Any other thoughts? Your opinions and experience are much appreciated! Thank you!

PR was a standout in Paris at Rosaraie de la Hay. I thought it was large there by the ramblers I think but HMF says 6 feet.

Yeah, I think it gets big, which is an issue for me. I don't trust HMF's sizes. The one at the rose park was a good size and I think it may be just 3 or 4 years old. Thanks, Sheila.

I have Paul Ricault here - grown it for 22 years now. Wonderful, huge blooms and a rich fragrance with a hint of Raspberry. It can reach 7 or 8 feet in good soil.

But the Blackspot is horrible. Its a leafless mess by mid-June. This is its one serious failing.

Thanks, @User. If it black spots like that I should stay away. It'slikely our rose park sprays but I dont want to. I may just stay content visiting it at the park. It really is breathtaking. Your description of thebloomabsnd fragrance is what Iremember .

@librarian_gardner_8b_pnw If it was clean and healthy in the garden you photographed it, they must have been spraying it to prevent disease. A shame it blackspots so easily, because its an exceptionally beautiful rose in every way.
