Anyone else having problems with HMF?

last modified: 3 years ago

I've been getting an error message for two days when I try to log into HelpMeFind. It looks as if their security certificate might be expired. This is part of the message I get:

Secure Connection Failed.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

I'm also getting a security warning from my Avast anti-virus program that the site is currently blacklisted.

No problems with HMF from my phone either.

If you are having trouble logging in, and if the website is triggering warnings from your antivirus, perhaps try contacting HMF? Thry might know what is causing the problem.

Very weird. Even when I added HMF to my "safe list" in Avast, I keep getting the security alert, and the site won't open. I've cleared my cookies and cache, too. Avast insists that HMF isn't safe.

It's working for me, also. Please send your information to roses@helpmefind.com . That's the way to get the fastest response and fix.

I'm having the same problem, fig. If you find the solution, please let us know.

Working fine for me. Try restarting your computer, if you haven't done that already. There's a "Report a problem" button on HMF right above where you sign in. Hope you find a solution to your problem.

Fig, I had that same thing happen to me about 3 weeks ago and then mysteriously it cleared up all on its it's own.

    No problems here!

Thanks to all for chiming in. It seems it might have been an erratic/random problem for some of us that finally hit critcal mass, lol. It's still ongoing for me as of today.

@roseseek Thanks Kim, I was going to report it today if it didn't clear up. You beat me to it, lol.

@woodrose Restarting didn't help (that's always the first thing to try, lol), nor did clearing cookies/cache, which is another reason I suspected it was on HMF's end. I even added it to my "safe/secure" exceptions list. Didn't help. Also...there was no way to use the "report problem" button on HMF: the site would not (still will not) load AT ALL. It was totally blocked by my anti-virus program and all I could see was a blank white window with a warning, lol.

There is often someone watching for alerts so when something fouls up, please send a quick email with the information. It can often help prevent worse problems.

It was working on my phone, but not the desktop.

    Thanks, Kim!

    Edit: It's working again!

@roseseek Kim, I'm still having the same problem. The only way I can access HMF is to disable my anti-virus program. And even if I already have HMF open, if I turn Avast back on, it won't let me open another HMF page or navigate the site. I've also double checked that HMF is on my "safe" list. Grrrrrr. If the problem persists, I'll contact admin again.

What they wrote was that it may take until late Tuesday for the new server to be up and running and the updated security certificate to work its way through the system. You may need to clear your cache/browser to see if that helps, or be patient until the switch-over is complete. Sorry about that. I'm sorry it's giving you fits. I've been on HMF heavily for the past few days researching quite a few roses and the only issue I've encountered has been with older photos opening. That, too, is supposed to be corrected.

It worked for me last night, but now it's back down again....

Very interesting. I think this attests to the value of having something like what fig has in place. I don’t have anything quite like that, though my in-house security consultant tells me sandboxing affords me a modicum of protection.

I'm still not able to access HMF without disabling my anti-virus. I've contacted HMF admin again. I realllllllly don't like disabling Avast. It has saved my bacon many times by preventing virus infections from infected sites.

There are two potential components to this issue... One is the security certificate on the server and the other is your browser history cache. I'm still not experiencing issues but if you are, please try cleaning your browser history so your browser doesn't continually attempt opening the site with the cached corrupt information. If you don't, it won't matter what the site does as your browser will continue using the information it saved from prior attempts. And, if you do still have issues, please report it to roses@helpmefind.com but only AFTER trying the site AFTER clearing your browser cache, and mention that you have cleared it. That will eliminate the duplicate step of them suggesting that step and getting a resolution faster and more efficiently.

@fig_insanity Z7b E TN take a look at this posted on the RHA by a member there

False positive, this would show something if there were an issue with the site

    https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/www.helpmefind.com

So possibly malware on your computer, maybe try download and run

    https://www.adlice.com/roguekiller/

    see if that says anything

@roseseek Kim, I've cleared both my cookies and cache multiple times. It was the first thing I tried, as I stated in a couple of comments. Doesn't help. I've run multiple virus/malware checks, with Avast, Malwarebytes AND Roguekiller. Nada. :(

Is anyone having an issue with HMF right now NOT using Avast? It appears to be an Avast specific issue. Determining that MAY help figure out what is going on.

    This just in...

"We have run several different website malware scanners against HMF and all have come back negative. We have also contacted Avast about a potential false-positive and we are requesting further information.

Unless a HMF guest reports otherwise, we have concluded this is an Avast specific issue. Temporarily turning off the Avast extension resolves the issue but we recognize that is not a desirable long term solution.

Avast is a superior security product but appears to at times be a bit too aggressive. We are eager to learn what has triggered this change as we have not made ANY recent code changes to HelpMeFind.

    Best regards,
    HMF Support"

And, this short-term fix suggested by an RHA site user... "My AVG anti virus protection was doing that too. I have uninstalled it for now and put in Bitdefender temporarily. This happened to me once 3 or 4 years ago. Eventually AVG sorted it self out and I reinstalled it. Hope this helps."

@roseseek Kim, I received an email from HMF admin saying basically the same thing. I had overlooked it, as I evidently was getting emails from at least two different people, and thought I had answered all their questions. But I do appreciate your and their efforts. Hopefully the issue with Avast will be addressed now that HMF has contacted them.

    Hi fig,

I think you have encountered an "old computer" syndrome ( I invented the term :)) I had the issue in Oct, 2021, there were tons of websites I could not access all of a sudden and then one by one. Turned out there was a computer code expired on Sept 30, 2021 that caused the havoc on my 10+ year Mac mini. But worry not, go search on YouTube, there are helps. Unfortunately I didn't save the life saving video; however your problem may be similar but not quite the same as mine so you need different solution, imho. Good luck !

@roseseek Kim, whatever the problem was, it seems to be fixed as of this morning. Both HMF and I reported the issue to Avast ( I was...ummm...emphatic), and it may be coincidental, but it was resolved within 12 hours of my reporting it, lol. I hope this was a fix for everyone, as it did seem to be Avast-specific. Thanks so much for your help.

Thank you for being "emphatic"! LOL! I'm glad it appears to be past.

It was not working for me yesterday, but suddenly, today, it's working again. :-)

    Thank you, fig!
