Sleeper sofas you can sleep on

We need a sleeper sofa for our new guest room. I have yet to sleep on one that is comfortable and/or looks good.

Also checkout "wall beds" (Murphy beds) - some have a sofa option - available from many vendors.

American Leather. Our guests have been quite satisfied.

I don't have a name brand to suggest, but -- having owned a sleeper sofa once -- I will throw out these thoughts:

    - Consider the weight of a sleeper sofa. It will be MUCH heavier than a plain sofa.

    - In addition to sleeping comfort, pay attention to sitting-comfort on the two sides; specifically, ours felt kinda ... sideways. The metal supports on the edges were a bit higher than the middle. That doesn't make much sense in writing, but the point is, SIT on all portions of the sofa, wiggle your butt, and see whether it's comfortable.

    - Finally, if your sofa mattress isn't all that comfortable, consider adding a lightweight mattress pad over it -- that extra bit can make the difference.

Our Joybird sofa bed is very comfortable. We were looking at the American leather but at the time, we wanted a less expensive price point. My husband and I just slept on my son's new sleeper sofa from west Elm and it was it much less comfortable then our Joybird.

Futon-sofas beat most pull-out sofas for comfort. Air mattresses are comfortable, too. Most pull-out sofas aren't comfortable because the mattress is thin. Futons have thicker mattresses.

We have a pull out from Ikea that has served us well.https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/friheten-sleeper-sectional-3-seat-w-storage-hyllie-beige-s59297565/#content We put a memory foam mattress top on it when using it as a bed. It is actully prettu comfortable with the memory foam.

Its all in the mechanism, the older metal frames, are the ones that dig into your back with the thin mattress. When i was shopping for a pull out you could upgrade to an air mattress over the metal frame. I ended up ordering an American leather which has a more bunky board foundation. The foam mattress rests on a full wooden frame which supports the mattress evenly. Youre going to pay for it tho, they are definitely more expensive. Ours hasnt been delivered yet and we are going on 5 months i think.

I don't think I have really slept on a comfortable sleeper sofa and I have slept on many. You always seem to fall to the middle and the springs and mattress hurt your back.

I have heard the comfort sleeper by American Leather is better designed but I haven't slept on one.

Have you thought about a nice daybed instead? You can decorate with pillows? We have one from World Market that's a light grey boho style - the "antique grey Indonesian". Not sure if you are more into modern style - if you are - then that won't work for you.

We also owned a folding sleeper chair/like a narrow twin bed. It was more comfortable than most sleeper sofa's but really ugly and not practical to sit on in a living room.

    Good luck!

I agree with American Leather; they don't have a bar down the center like some others. That said, I'm not sure any are super comfy. But our American Leather one has actually gotten some good comments! It's a foam mattress but is thinner than a regular mattress.

The Ikea option Michael referenced is a good choice. My niece wanted her bedroom to be multifunctional and mentioned it was very comfortable, which was important for her with having to sleep on every night.

@M Riz Did you receive the AL sofa bed? Would love a review!

@Patricia Colwell Consulting . Any Murphy Bed recommendations that don't look too clunky?

Yes it took probably a couple weeks after my last post. It is super sturdy, no complaints about construction,It weighs a ton. We had guests spend a week sleeping on it. The mattress is pretty firm (hard), I bought a 4” memory foam pad and it helps. Its absolutely more comfortable than an old school metal frame. I would buy this type of pull out mechanism again, but id pay attention to the mattress firmness.

Thanks so much, appreciate your insight! Can you fold up the foam pad with the mattress, or do you have to store it separately?

We have guests infrequently, i stuff it into a jumbo space bag and suck the air out, then its easy to stash.

My parents have an Ethan Allen with an airmattress sleeper inside. As a sofa it is incredibly comfortable. The air mattress is great quality and has some kind of coil springs inside. But something about how the mattress sits on the pullout frame I don't love. Others who sleep there find it great. When we come to town, my husband and I put the air mattress on the floor and love it!
