dishwasher placement dilemma- no uppers/too far to unload?

Hi,

I ordered cabinets (long lead time) already and I am starting to worry that it wont be function and trying to make a possible change last minute. UGH.

? Swap dishwasher/trash placement

We have a long row of lowers adjacent to sink w/ windows so NO uppers there which makes it tricky. Designer has suggested keeping trash to R and dishwasher to L out of prep zone. But in doing so, dishwasher is REALLY far from corner upper cabinets for glasses and mugs (like 9.5 feet!). DW is close (across aisle) to dish and cutlery drawer (in island).

Unless I can find another space to store the glasses/mugs in the design, (maybe an easier fix at this point to re-think the lower cabinet left of DW?? My island is full- has pullouts for pots/pans, pullouts for dishes (upper) and lower (miscellaneous prep items) and a built in microwave. I think I need to swap DW and Trash and slide the sink slightly to the left/reconfigure the lower cabinets slightly.

HELP! Thank for any feedback on this.

If swapping DW/Trash isn't an option at this point (waiting on cabinet company), does anyone have suggestion about where to put glasses/mugs closer?

I will attach photos...

Sorry first version of layout got rotated.

Having an impossible time trying to add photos. I’m trying to pull them up as PDFs, I’ve tried Pulling them up as JPEG and nothing is working. Help.

Thanks- Using macbook. when I open iphotos to pull them up they dont get transferred in.

I've tried taking photos from my iphone instead of the PDF plans - using the HOUZ app but my screen goes black when trying to take photo. not sure why one of them went in but sideways.

Does HOUZZ prefer JPEG or HEIC or some PDF? PDF's never work for me here

Sometimes this site makes it impossible to load photos and there seems to be no rhyme or reason.

Are you using a browser on a computer or some other device.

Sometimes what helps me is quitting the browser. Also check the size of your photos as many photos are very large files and aren't meant to be uploaded to a website. I will sometimes have luck by resizing photos.

I would have given up the shelf cabinet and standard cabinet and replaced them with a 3-drawer 30" cabinet for storing glasses/mugs plus plenty of room for other stuff.

I would also have done a 27" drawer bank to the right of the range.

You can always use dividers and containers to organize a large drawer, but you can't make a small drawer bigger!

If you want the sink centered on the middle window, then swapping sides for the DW won't be possible because you're trading out a 24" width (DW) for an 18" width (trash). At this point, I think you may be stuck with your current layout. You can always "stage" the unloading by putting all the glasses on the counter first while you unload everything; then put the glasses away last after everything else is unloaded.

I wouldn't switch the DW and trash as that would put your DW in the middle of your prep space. (Guess this depends on how you use your kitchen but I load dishes while I prep so tripping over the DW would get annoying really fast. If you don't empty your DW before you prep, it also means no one can help you with the dishes while you're cooking). The only issue you have is glassware right now. I wouldn't make a bigger issue with flow just so I don't have to carry glasses a few feet. Whatever gets stored in the cabinets by your range will also need to be carried, and someone needs to carry a glass close to the fridge (assuming you are pouring things from the fridge into a glass), so it needs to go that direction anyway.

The only thing I would change is that I would probably have wanted pots and pans by the stove, not in the island, but it's not the end of the world.

Thank you, yes you’re probably right-

swapping it would be too difficult because we would have to move things down 6 inches including the windows etc. I may end up just subbing out the base cabinet to the left of the dishwasher with a slightly wider bank of three drawers for mugs and glasses if I can make the open shelves shallower without too much of a restocking fee. 🤞🏻

I was planning to use those open shelves near the slider for some small basket/bins with dog toys etc., things that I use outdoors but bring back in

I would have done a wall cabinet in the corner and around to the window. 2 Wall cabinets does not seem to be enough. It will be awkward to add one now because of how the stove run was laid out.

The easiest solution - put a door on that open end cabinet - it will be perfect for that stuff .

I am assuming you are doing some kind of floating shelves to the right of the windows - put your mugs and glasses that are used every day on there - it will be fine.

I wouldn’t sweat it. The glasses/mugs can go on the floating shelves or you can unload them onto a tray and carry it to the upper cabinet. It’s not that far.

You need to place the dishwasher near where you store your dishes, silverware and glassware.
Or you need to store those things near the dishwasher. Period. Three steps and put those things away. Most of the items in the dishwasher are dishes, silverware and glassware. The TRASH should be near your prep zone because that’s where you will generate the most trash. Mugs can go on a shelf near the coffee maker. Once the kitchen is done, you will load up your drawers and cabinets. You will know soon enough if you need to move things around for your convenience.
