Help with kitchen colors

last modified: 4 years ago

**Post edit* unfortunately there’s nothing that I can do about the cabinet color and the floor color. I know it DOESN’T go. I’m not looking for anyone to reiterate that fact. I am looking for people to give me some ideas of what I can do to work with what I currently have. There’s nothing else I can change except for the paint color and the backsplash at this time. I am stuck for now and looking for ways to make the best out of the situation.

If you must know (for those that insist on commenting on how it doesn’t go and I need to just change it) we were going to get our cabinets painted white but had to put that on pause as we helped pay for expenses of our dear family member that was recently murdered. For now, this is what we have to work with and just trying to do the best we can given the circumstances. Thanks for understanding. I commented with some much older pictures as I am unable to take current pictures right now. The surrounding floors are all that same style as in the original picture.

The picture attached is my current kitchen before making updates. Cabinet color unfortunately will not be changed and will remain the brown it is.

I am currently having the floors redone to the plank that I have standing up against the cabinet.

Also going to change the backsplash and the wall colors to make it blend better with the new floors. Since I can’t change cabinet color I’m struggling to find inspiration with the brown color.

I need suggestions and ideas:

1. what color to paint the walls of the kitchen?

2. what backsplash to use?

The sample plank doesn't coordinate well with the cabinets or granite. A dark chocolate color might look better.

the more helpful thing is to lay the floor sample down right on your floor and stand back for a photo.the selection might work. there are grays and blacks in the counter. I'd play that up along w this floor choice. I'd get black hardware..maybe nickel . and try out some very light gray or creamy ?oatmeal? colored backsplash tiles . the tough thing is all the warm tones in counter so play w grays and blacks . the floor selection has a bit of creamy warmth....its not all that gray but will play w grays and blacks . Absolutely change the warm hardware to help this along....and spend time bringing in backsplash tiles.....its critical to sample. People do use black tile backsplashes.....a consideration. w black hardware.......can work w under cab lighting.

Your cabinets and counters are warm tones and your prospective new floor is a cool tone. Since your cabinets and counters are staying as is, I would select flooring that coordinates with your cabinets. Take a cabinet door with you to the flooring store and see what works in the store. Then, take a floor sample home to test against your entire kitchen.

No No No........that colour of flooring does not coordinate with the cabinets or countertops. You will have a different issue if you use that floor colour.

That is not going to go well. I hope you can return the flooring.

If you are keeping cabinet color and countertops, why are you going in a gray direction? Do not go that direction at all. You need warm-toned floor--goldish/red, not cool gray. It could be a light warm tone for contrast, but no, no, no on the gray.

Also, you have to show us photos taken from farther back, including any open spaces so that everything you choose harmonizes with your "givens," the cabinets and countertops. This is how good design works--it all has to work with the finishes that aren't going to change.

Backsplash should be the very palest shade of the background gold of your countertop--so palest cream. Same color for the walls. Bring home a paint deck and choose that pale golden cream by putting it against the countertop.

I share this really helpful link when deciding wood undertones.

    What is there now?

Can you give us a view from further back?

How does the kitchen connect nearby rooms?

    What is the flooring those?

So sorry about your family member. Do you have to change the floor? What you have now doesn't look bad to me. Could you just change the backsplash to something creamy colored and paint the walls?

Has the flooring already been put in? If not, your current flooring looks a million times better with the kitchen than the new flooring will look. Even if you already bought the new flooring tile, you should cancel and try and resell on craigslist. Your existing floor may not be trendy or particularly pretty, but it is not a total eyesore.

If money is as tight as you say, I wouldn't be spending money on this kitchen. At most, i would just change the backsplash to something simpler. Or even more appropriately, just remove the current backsplash and paint that space. Because technically you already have a backsplash with that four inch lip, and you shouldn't have a second one.

Sorry to hear about your personal challenges. I think you should take "kitchen redo" off your additional list of stresses.

I totally agree with Latifolia. What's wrong with the kitchen the way it is? I have always liked warm tones. And it all coordinates. To spiff it up, I would just perhaps put a pretty rug in there, some much brighter lighting (see housegal200's photos), and some shinier hardware.

Maybe just focus on your family now. Sounds like an awful time and dealing with aesthetics during a traumatic time seems too much (to me).

Thanks for additional info and photos. I suggest removing the current tile backsplash. Since the granite has a traditional 4" backsplash already, that's all that is needed.

Once the new flooring is installed, it will be much easier to choose a new wall paint color. That color could be the same as the color you chose for the cabinets' new paint.

You can remove the 4" backsplash once the cabinets are painted, then choose a new tile from the colors in the granite.

I would remove that short backsplash as well. Simplify the back splash - an offwhite color would go very nice. I would consider painting a sage green color. It would help break up some of the cream tones of the whole space.

So sorry about all you are going through.

no one looking at the picture can really say how the floor will end up looking once installed. The floor choice is not gray. It is a bleached color....more in a neutral range. Use of warm patterned floor runners/mats will make a big impact w the flooring simply as a background. CHANGE YOUR HARDWARE to a black transitional style. .

The only thing that needs changing in your kitchen is the backsplash, otherwise it is quite nice, love the color of your cabinetry.

From what I have read, the Floor is Bought and going down. Sounds like you cannot bring it back, or that you have chosen to do this floor throughout your home and need to make it work in your kitchen.

With that said, I honestly would not do a back splash yet. I would re-evaluate the kitchen after you have the floor down.

If you have a need to see that back splash go. Take it down and just paint the area. You already have a back splash. It is a 4 inch back splash.

As mentioned above. It's a lovely kitchen and only the back splash needs to be replaced.

I'm guessing you still plan to paint the cabinets once funds allow? Think of this as a staged update then, it will be less stressful that way. And I would absolutely remove that backsplash and install undercabinet lights if you don't have them already. Promise, once the backsplash is gone, it will feel completely different.
