Siding Corner Joint Gap

I have a home built in 1970 with hardboard siding. The corners of the home have metal corner trim like this: (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Gibraltar-Building-Products-7-5-in-Tall-x-1-75-in-Woodgrain-Aluminum-Primed-XL-Siding-Corner-Moulding-2108XL-W-10/317149275).

One of the corners near the roof overhang has a gap that the metal does not cover across the top 3 siding boards. It looks like some of the siding boards on one side were cut too short when installed. Other than this gap, the siding itself seems to be in good condition as it is near the top and doesn’t get as much water exposure as the lower planks.

What solutions are available for this gap? I am thinking of filling the gaps between the metal cover and the hardboard siding as well as the open gap in the picture with siding caulk. Is this a good idea or would it create issues? Any water that would get behind the metal corner should still be able to drain out the bottom.
