Help with winter outdoor project . . . (decorating hanging lantern)

Where I live, not very many projects to do in the winter, but I have one . . . but I'm struggling with it.

I have a post that has a hanger for the hose on one side, and a plant hanger on the other. Hose is in winter storage and no plants possible. So it looks kind of empty, considering the plant hanger is a decorative cast iron one . . . last year I had a greenery arrangement in a pot hanging there until spring. I made it myself out of some shrub clippings I had to do around the house. I have more greenery this year . . . so I'd like to do a candle lantern decorated with greenery. I have some battery powered candles in storage just taking up space, and I saw a possible metal lantern on sale in a local store, but I can't get my head around how to decorate it by attaching greens. There's nothing to attach them to . . .

Anyone ever seen a clever project like this or done one? I have spruce, arborvitae and juniper cuttings to use. Also some red bows from past years' wreaths.

Would you be able to gather some greens around the top of the lantern (stem ends up) and tie the greens onto the lantern? You could tie with twine (or we use zip ties) and then cover that with ribbon. Something like this.

The battery operated candles might work if they are on timers or work by remote.

I have strings of (solar) lights that I use in lanterns at our lake cottage. No one has to be around to turn them on or off. They come on when its almost dark, and stay lit past

    1:00 am.

I took this picture to send to my daughter before Christmas. A block of oasis in the bottom is what they used (and they didn't cover it very well!)

I agree — green foam would work well.

Another idea is to wrap the pole with the greenery, and just have your candle in the lantern:

I like the battery strand lights here, and they could be used with your candle, too. I always use them at Christmas and love the soft light:

Oops! I may have misunderstood what you wanted Pink! I thought you were wanting a candle inside the lantern and greenery on the outside. The pic Nekotish posted is great and yes, oasis would work well.

I just bought a lantern like Jinx posted. I think I am going to attach the greenery to the top because it is open and when it snows here if I don't close off the top somehow, the interior of the lantern will get snow in it, and then it will melt, etc. It came with a battery operated candle in it.

I took a photo of the lantern on the hook, but I am in a rush so can't post it yet. The hanger is decorative so not sure I should cover it up, but perhaps attach some greenery to the post . . .

Here's the set up. It looks out of balance to me. The hanger is a casting of a rabbit carving that a friend of mine did. He's a wood carver as part of his profession so he did a series of molds for the casting company.

Lpink, that is a cute hanger. Couldyou try putting greenery on the hose hanger and then up the pole? Since you aren’t using the hose part it looks a little unbalanced, so adding greenery on that side would fill it out. You could put a few sprigs on top of the lantern too.

Be aware the cold will take a toll on batteries used outside, so use the beefiest, heav6 duty ones you can find.

I think you're right. Lantern looks too long for the height of that cool hanger. Color doesn't seem right either - perhaps a verdigris finish?
