Going grey update

last modified: 4 years ago

So, I'm not exactly sure what I just did with my hair, but I really like it. It's the first step in the grey transition. The colorist I went to used lots of foils and also pulled the color from my part and around my face and used toner on the areas that she lightened. The one dimensional warm brown color that was there is gone. It's hard to tell from the photos, but the back is a lot more pale than it was. She told me I don't need to come in again for 8- 10 weeks. I'm not sure how the new growth will blend, but she says it will. I believe her (ok, because I really want to.) Then it will be more toner I think. She is a color specialist and former Loreal consultant who used to travel in this area teaching other stylists how to work with color,)

Remember, this was my inspiration picture for the finished product. The after picture is basically grey with blonde tones. I wasn't brave enough to do that on day one. I'll get there. I still have tons of dark hair underneath.

Inspiration path photo:

The lighting in the studio (and the shine product) makes my hair appear more blonde than it is, it is more washed out in person and I'm fine with that.

(I know you're all thinking "that's not grey." I swear it's more pale in person and as the grey grows in the transition will seem less blonde. And also, I like it!)

Whatever it is, it is beautiful and so are you. Don't touch it. I know some will disagree. I don't think I ever commented on the other thread ... I don't think you should go gray. Only my opinion.

It looks great! And you look pleased. That is what really matters.

I hope you'll post more info and photos during your journey. I obviously have new stylist since moving. She is highly trained (and the salon is always having color classes from various color experts for the companies) and has helped previous customers transition. I just haven't bitten the bullet yet, but we are doing something different than my last stylist, so it's a start.

That looks wonderful! Very natural, lovely color.

Of course it helps that you’re a stunner!

    Gorgeous!

    Beautiful and you shine :)

I think you will love it when it grows all the way in. You just cannot tell the finished look until you are pretty far in. It will become a very exciting journey. I see many before and after photos where women look so much better with their natural color. But again, you can't necessarily tell at first. so it is a lovely surprise in the end.

It look lovely. You must not have a lot of gray. Mine is completely silver in the front and when the roots grow in , there is a very noticeable line, even with my medium blonde hair. i doubt there would be any way to go gray gradually.

i kinda gotta agree with Mtn. Youre too young to be gray. Wait another twenty years.

if you browse some facebook groups like Silver Vixens or Gray and Proud you get a whole new perspective on this subject!

Mtn and Ded opened the door and I'm walking through it. I also feel you are too young.

Most everyone here with gray are at least a decade or two older than you.

So while I agree that gray can be beautiful, you will look “ older.”

Whatever you decide, I'm in your corner.

I don't know how old you are, but if you're going gray naturally already, then I believe you're not too young to go that route. Honestly, I am just so happy not having to color my hair anymore. There's a lot to be said for embracing what nature gave you, but as with so many other things, to each her own.

You new color looks fabulous. Hoping you will share what it looks like at 8 weeks.

You guys are really sweet. I'm turning 58 in a few weeks. I think I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach to this new look and make my decision based on how the new growth looks. I could totally get behind a look that needs maintenance every 8-10 weeks vs four! I'm also going to Hawaii in a month and am curious what all that sun and surf will do to it.

I can see tiring of having to go every 4 weeks. And I like grey hair. But you look so good right there I just couldn't stay quiet! : )

With that pretty face any color will look great, as today’s does.

You look gorgeous and so does your hair. I’m glad you are happy with it and hope it continues to grownand blend in the gray as expected. It’s so freeing to gain back an hour of your life and do without the coloring process. I love my natural color.

Looks good! I have seen SO many great looking heads of gray hair lately - good haircut/style is key. I think age is irrelevant as long as its not a case of premature gray.

It looks good! I agree with Kaya, if you are already turning gray, I would try it out. If you get further in the process and don't like it, you can always come back to this.

Mine is completely silver in the front and when the roots grow in , there is a very noticeable line, even with my medium blonde hair. i doubt there would be any way to go gray gradually.

Ded, not true. My hair was very dark brown. I have two silver "streaks" at the very front hairline. So you can imagine how my roots showed. It can be done. You need a good colorist. I really had no "line" during the time I let mine grow out.

I agree with 2katz. There are so many beautiful heads of gray hair. I love mine and get so many complements. I have had MEN I do not know approach me and compliment my hair (I need an embarrassed emoji here LOL)! To not have to go through the constant upkeep to cover my roots, etc. it is so, SO worth it. My husband loves it too.

    Looks wonderful!

I think it looks great as is - hard to know how it will change because I have no idea how gray you really are or what kind of gray you have- white, silver, steel - or a mix. The wonderful thing about hair color (and cuts for that matter) is it's not cast in stone. In 6 months if you feel this is too soon to be gray you can always color, highlight, tone or whatever feels right.

A friend of mine decided about 8-9 years ago to get a short cut and let hers grow out - same age you are now. A year into it her DH decided not to be married anymore and within 6 months she was coloring her hair again - trauma induced hair coloring we call it! Fast forward to pandemic salon issues and she grew it out again - it's gorgeous, she's gorgeous and ready for it this time and no man will make her second guess again.

I'm doing pretty much the same as you. I've done foils for decades but have never had to do a base colour as even at 68 I don't have enough grey to warrant it. But it's time to do a transition. So I'm letting the hair at the temples go grey and letting the base colour of my own hair be one of the colour layers. Does that make sense? It's allowing some of the grey strands to start coming through gradually. I'm quite liking it.

    I think it looks great.

You look great! I’m afraid of going grey while still working. That being said, I’m also on love with that dark pewter color younger gals are doing. Like ”can I go grey AND younger at the same time???”

Haha! @1929Spanish-GW my standard line to my stylist when he asks 'what are we doing today' is 'you're job is to make me look 20 years younger and 20# thinner'. Hasn't happened yet :-/

I think the color she gave you looks great with your complexion. What you have now looks very natural and compliments your skin tone. You hit the jackpot with this stylist and 8-10 weeks follow-up is a dream.

I think your hair is a great color as it is right now. But what really I noticed is your lovely smile. A smile can take years off.

Love this first step! Looking forward to following along on your going grey journey as it is something I increasingly contemplate. But if you stop right here it is a gorgeous look on you and you can revisit going grey in ten years :).

I agree with Arapaho in that your hair color goes very well with your skintone. Our former admin assistant did a similar process and it turned out great. Her hair always looked good.

You look great! My stylist is transitioning my grey in the exact same way. I'm very happy with it. Mine looks blonder in photos as well. You are lovely!

It could take another ten or more years to go gray naturally so I would give that natural process a chance. Even at 66, I just have a few silvers in my hair.

I think it looks great. As a salt and pepper person for decades getting more salt than pepper, I say go for it. People are always amazed at my age at work. Not sure if that says good things for me or these people just have frames of reference that didn't take care of themselves!

There are a few people at work going through this same process. They call me the OG and say I am their idol.

Look forward to seeing this grow out.

Eileen, for those of us who color our hair and then abruptly stop, the natural process leaves a wide swath of grey (in my case) —not a few silvers. There’s no way I could tolerate the growing out process.

My fear is not knowing what colour of "grey" will I be left with. Will it be a grungy grey or a nice silver grey. My colourist says that what she can see of it is a nice silver grey. But who knows.

My sister stopped colouring her hair in her mid-fifties and her hair is a gorgeous grey but still has the dark underneath at the back. It is so interesting.

jojoco - you look great and I would not have pegged you for 58. As someone said - the smile can take years off of a face and yours certainly does that.

@blfenton - I had that same concern about the color of my gray. My stylist assured me it looked pretty good and she was right. I expected to have a mousy brown gray but it is more of a platinum blonde gray with no brown.

Hey, mouses are cute. (So are mice.)

    😁

Shortly after I hit 40, I saw my first few strands of grey hair. I think I did what EVERYONE does - I plucked the first few out and tried to live in blissful denial. That didn't work, they started multiplying and I realized plucking wasn't a long term viable option.

I went to my beloved stylist and told her it was time to start coloring my hair. Fortunately she was smarter than me and literally refused. My hair is about the exact same color as Jojo's hair is now, and she said, "let it blend in." She also knows I am a very low maintenance woman. I spend summers with a pony tail hanging out of my favorite pink ball cap. She told me that my hair color was perfect for letting the grey blend in....and like the smart folks above said, if it got to the point the grey took over and I wanted to color it, that was the point where it made sense.

I am now darn near 55 - and first let me say I have no idea how that happened. LOL. But I am so glad I never started coloring my hair. Fortunately for me, the greys are coming in very slowly. After 15 years only maybe 10% of my hair is actually grey. And Jojo's new hair color is PERFECT for letting the grey blend in. That color in my hair hides the grey. Sure, up close you can find them if you're really looking. But otherwise they really do blend in nicely.

So Jojo - Your new hair color suits you. And if you want to let yourself see how much and what color grey you have, your stylist picked the perfect color. You are adorable, and that won't change no matter what color hair you choose to have. :)

her hair is a gorgeous grey but still has the dark underneath at the back

I started getting grey hair above my ears as a senior in high school. Now at 61yo, what I can see is easily 90% grey. Like your sister, the back has more natural brown hair. I need to take a few photos to see for myself. Either way, I don't think I'm ready yet.

You guys are truly wonderful. You've made me so happy with your comments!

    (((group hug))

It looks wonderful! I really like the color and it seems like it's a great first step to being gray. I am also contemplating it. I am 55 and have to get my roots touched up every 4 weeks - at that point, I've got at least 1/2" growth and it's just too much for my comfort to see that sitting next to my dark brown hair. When you add up the time in chair plus 50 minute round trip, the $80/month plus tip, and the 2.5 decades long chemical exposure, going gray starts to look more and more appealing.

You are gorgeous….and I like the look of the blond highlights on you. Why go grey when that looks so good?

Your hair looks incredible. Great photo and a happy smile!

I LOVE the color of your hair! I wouldn’t change it from this new color, it suits you so well. Going to the salon every 8 to 20 weeks would be a breeze.

This is my hair color (holding baby Andrew and with reading glasses pushed atop my head). It requires an appointment every three weeks to maintain a complicated schedule of base color, highlights, lowlights, glaze, keratin treatments, etc. Not every treatment every time of course but at least two, plus a haircut at each visit. I have an emergency at home kit for roots in case either of us ( me or stylist) is hospitalized, lol. I am still in "dye or die" mode but that may change someday.
