I wish Speed Queen made kitchen appliances...the trouble I've had with Whirlpool dishwasher and range. Very disappointing. I have adult kids, who hopefully will be in appliance buying position in a few years. I couldn't help but steer them away from the appliances that fall under the Whirpool name. It's not what it used to be, sadly.

When we have to replace our top loading Speed Queen washer (hopefully not for a long time), we would likely get the SQ FL. We too are running the washer and dryer for many hours daily. Jockeying for washer/dryer position is a good way you had of putting it.

However, many here do like their LG full size FL washers. I can't speak to that directly, but if it would have fit here, we may have had the LG on our list of contenders.

You could always do two sets of stacked Miele appliances. Would take up less space than a single set of large capacity appliances. Then you can have two different types of loads going at the same time.

Dryers are heat pump so no venting needed. if you have an electric dryer now you have all the power you need already in place as all of Miele’s laundry is 120V.

Something to consider.

@moosemac, what specific model is your Maytag? Doesn't seen likely it's larger capacity 15 yrs ago than what's on the market nowadays. Frontloader capacity has been on an increasing curve, market driven by consumers wanting to home-launder those queen- and king-size comforters.

It is an Epic with 4.0 cubic capacity.

The Maytag Epic was a renaming of the KitchenAid Ensemble (which was a version of the Whirlpool Duet). The original Epic version was 3.8 cu ft, later was increased a bit. Whirlpool dropped KitchenAid laundry products when they bought Maytag in 2006 and positioned Maytag as the premium brand instead of KitchenAid.

Current Whirlpool frontloaders range from 4.3 to 4.5 to 5.0 cu ft. Maytag branded are 4.5, 4.8, and 5.0 cu ft.

LG offers 4.5, 5.0, and 5.2. Samsung 4.5 and 5.0. GE 4.5, 4.8, 5.0.

Depends what's in-stock / available for any given brand & model.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Our current washer and dryer gave up the ghost last night. I panic shopped today and ended up with what was in stock locally which were the LG 5.0 capacity FL washer and 7.4 capacity dryer. They will be delivered Tuesday. I will leave feedback on them once I use them.

FYI - Maytag was out until the end of February as were most Whirlpool models. Lowes was telling me they might be able to get the Samsung in a couple weeks. I ended up at a local appliance store which I have used many times. At least I know they are honest when they say they have an item in the warehouse.

I think you'll be very happy with the LG pair - LG consistently gets excellent reviews for their FL washers and dryers.

I'm assuming you got the LG WM4200 and matching dryer. That's the set I have and I love them.

Moosemac, what cycles did you typically use on your Maytag? Also, did the Maytag have an onboard heater?

We use delicate, hand wash, normal, heavy duty, extra rinse, and presoak mostly. The washer does not have an onboard heater.

There is a downloaded cycle called handwash/wool, but it's longer than what you're used to. There's also a downloaded cycle called Delicate Dresses. There's not a presoak, just pewash that I've found to be very effective in combination with the ensuing cycle after the prewash. Temperature is always cold. I'm assuming with Maytag not having onboard heater, hot water may not be important to you. But I will pass this information on. Normal Cycle "warm" is 86 degrees F and "hot" is 95-98F. If heaviest soil level is selected on hot, target temp is 104F. Heavy Duty cycle warm is 89-90F. Hot is 117F. Those are the same temps for Perm press, Delicate, Bedding, and Towels cycles. Personally, I detest these wimpy temperatures mandated by Energy Star certification. Warm SHOULD be 90-100F and hot 140F like the old days. Be very judicious with detergent as this machine is very sensitive to foam, especially with residue left from previous washer. Especially with towel loads. I've been using the maximum number of extra rinses (up to 3) on every load I've done. It's amazing how leftover detergent residue results in fabrics being scratch, itchy, rough. I always have TurboWash selected, and that's default on Normal & HeavyDuty cycles. There's also a downloaded cycle call Full Load that I tried for the first time yesterday and I liked it a lot, seemed to deal better with full large loads and the water being spun out from large loads of towels and absorbant fabrics and not causing as much of a suds lock. There's alsos a downloaded cycle for denim/jeans.
