I live in a condo and I need the type that has minimal problems with mold

Would appreciate learning what others have experienced

The answer will differ depending on the size(s) you need, and whether or not your dryer can be vented. If you want an electric dryer, make sure you aren’t looking at gas models.

    Thank you

I posted a similar query on this forum and got a lot of help from knowledgeable Houzzers. Search for Laundry Center. I posted on March 6 and will soon be ready to update folks on the outcome. It’s tagged Laundry and also Appliances.

FWIW, here is a link to the thread I mentioned above. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6557999/laundry-center-recommendations#n=34

You can see the hoops I put myself through in trying to find something with the features I wanted that would fit in the space I have. Space was the deciding factor. I must add that wdccruise was especially helpful at saving me from myself when I got overwhelmed.

Amystoller and wdccruise thank you for your time. I think I’m leaning to the LG washtower just have to see if it will fit in my space .

So I have spent 2 days reading Reddit reviews of the LG washtower and it’s a nightmare for others.

The complaints are that clothes are ruined even in gentle cycle, many electric error codes coming up, machine doesn’t clean and hours for 1 load

I have Miele front-loading machines (dryer is ventless) and am very happy with them. They can be stacked, and they're compact so good for smaller spaces.

Porkchop. I’m looking into the Miele. Some videos say that washing cottons can take longer than 3.5 hours. Is this true?

Ventless (condenser) dryers are slower than vented machines.

dadoes is right, Josie. If your condo permits venting, that's what I would recommend. Otherwise ventless is your only option. But at least you'll be able to do laundry at home. That's a luxury I don't take for granted!

"Porkchop. I’m looking into the Miele."

What are the dimensions of the space you have for the stacked washer-dryer? If you have sufficient space for full-size appliances -- typically 27"W x 30"D x 40"H* -- there's no reason to consider these compact and extremely expensive ($4,000-$6000/set) Miele appliances.

(In CR's tests, full-size dryers took about an hour to dry a 12-pound test load. The Miele dryer took an 1-1/2 hours to dry a six-pound test load.)

    *80" stacked

There is no room for full size appliances. The ones I inherited after buying the condo are likely what is referred to as twin ok sets

The current ones are stacked. No room for side by side and I can’t reach the dust box. The idea

Stacking normal size appliances will be too tall for me to reach the controls and my knees prevent me from using a stool to climb. Ventless is appealing and now I know what I’m in for as far as timing

I own multiple sets of Miele W1 washers and T1 dryers. My washers have over 10k hours on them and the dryer is also over 10k hours.

They are great machines. The dryer is a heat pump and NOT a traditional condensor. OUR house normally has dry times of around 60 minutes for most loads that are NOT towels. Towels are closer to 90 minutes. This assumes the load is spun at max speed (1600 rpm).

We have 12 people at home yet and do 30-40 loads of laundry per week. Trust me our wash loads are NOT small.

We love the Miele machines. Their only real big downside is price. If you buy the Miele machines ALWAYS buy the extended warranty and make sure to buy it directly from Miele on their website. A single service call at any time during the five years will cost you more than the cost of the contract. Its cheap inaurance.

Thank you. Are you in the US or Canada? The seller is stating the set comes with a 5 year warranty.

Luna. Do you wash and dry king size comforters?

"Some videos say that washing cottons can take longer than 3.5 hours. Is this true?"

Do you mean 3.5 hours DRYING time? The longest wash cycle is sanitize, which is somewhere around 2.5 hours -- but that's a cycle with a specific purpose, not an everyday cycle and you may choose to never run it.

I have a T1 heat pump dryer. I'd say a typical load takes about 1.25-1.5 hours; that's not all that much longer than the previous vented gas dryers I've had, which usually took about an hour for a thorough dry. Some things take less time, just depends. Something like bed sheets or tablecloths, which are a lighter material, may only take 45 minutes to an hour, if that.

There is a learning curve with this type of dryer, but once you get past that all will be well. I am very pleased with my Miele machines; they were money well spent.

"Do you wash and dry king size comforters?"

These are compact machines. A king comforter will FIT inside the drums, but I doubt they'd get thoroughly washed and dried, there's not enough room for ample movement. But I haven't actually tried, so I don't know that for a fact. I wash my king sheets in the W1, though -- no problem there.

I take all my comforters to the laundry mat; I did so even when I had a full-size washer, I want them tumbled around in the huge jumbo machines for a thorough washing and drying.

Pork chop. To clarify, I watched a video on washing cottons and the cycle took 2.59 hours.

I will likely take the comforter to the cleaners.

Scroll back and you'll see that I've fixed it. Though you may be sorry I did!

"To clarify, I watched a video on washing cottons and the cycle took 2.59 hours."

I have model WXD160. There is no dedicated Cotton cycle. I don't know about the cycles on other models. Cottons and bed linens wash up just fine on the Normal cycle, which clocks in at just under 1.5 hours (time varies slightly based on washing temp). It's the Sanitize cycle that takes around 2.5 hours.

"...and my knees prevent me from using a stool to climb."
Can you bend? Asking because the Miele are low to the ground because of their smaller size, and you will have to bend to reach into the washer if you stack. You can't stack both the washer and dryer on a pedestal, so if you stack the washer is going to have to sit directly on the ground. I considered stacking, but for this reason I chose side-by-side with each machine on a pedestal. This set-up is perfect for me -- everything is at waist height and an easy reach, and the pedestals have drawers that serve as storage space.
You say there's no room for side-by-side, but what are the actual measurements of the space? You may be able to fit side-by-side Miele, it just depends. Another option is locating the dryer in a different location so you can get them both on pedestals if you can't bend -- you can plug in a ventless anywhere you want (well, maybe not on carpeting); Miele plugs are 120V so fit into standard household outlet.

I've had an LG washtower for 4 years - no problems so far.

Josie, "condo" doesn't give us enough information to be more helpful to you. Is your condo a house/townhome? An apartment/flat? Is the space for your new washer and dryer a closet? A small room? A large room? Your kitchen? A bathroom? And by the way, are you in the US? Canada? Some place else?

Really and truly, posting the full dimensions of your available space for installation will help. (If you are used to metric units, please convert to Imperial units and add those, too.)

Currently we're all flying blind here.

" Tor Vet. Happy for you but the current comments are way too harsh "

Just adding to the comments, not suggesting what you should do.

I didn't think anyone here was being harsh. Josie, did you mean the comments on Miele that you found elsewhere? We really are trying to help, each from our own perspective.

Apologies to all for being vague. Flat unit in small 40 yr building in Toronto. Small room 56 inches from door to back of wall. Currently I have both appliances at 28 inches wide and depth at 26 with height together at 71 inches. Vented dryer. Floor to lint box is 56 inch but I hubby cleans it.

Door frame is 79 and about 28 inches wide but will recheck width. We have the dryer connected and washer connected to 2 separate outlets. Texts with building electrician are not clear and will ask him to come out to view the unit to ensure we can accommodate both new appliances. Apologies as I was concentrating on Miele performance vs the LG tower. I can bend to reach into washer but I cannot put a dryer into another room.

Hope this helps. First thing to do is beg electrician to come out as both the Miele and even Lg run on 120 v and I was told our building runs on mainly 208v

To clarify. The comments on this platform are not harsh at all. Bad wording on my part. Th areperforthe Lg Re product produ

The info on current lg performance are very negative and so I’m not confident to buy thes.

Thanks, that helps! At least according to what I've learned, heat pump dryers tend to be superior to the older condenser kind, but vented ones still dry items faster. So I'm not sure why you're only considering un-vented models.

I encountered a lot of gotchas during my installation. First the machines were delivered too late in the day for the installers to get started; despite the appliance company knowing the installers would be ready first thing in the morning. So the installers had to come back the next day. Then, the electrician did not research the unit models and the type of cord and outlet they needed, so he had to an drive to his shop to get the right materials (at least an hour spent on that). Finally, the vent hose was so stiff that the installers couldn't push the machines sufficiently far back in the closet for the closet doors to close. So they had to order a new hose and come back the next day to complete the job. Three days total for a "simple" appliance replacement!

Don't forget to find out if you'll need a stacking kit, not just the washer and dryer, if you still plan to stack the units. I'm not sure I understand the width problem in your space. If your room is more than 79 inches wide, do you really not have room for side-by-side?

Also, for whatever it may be worth, the link trap for my dryer is inside the dryer door, low enough for me to reach it easily. I was worried about the controls being on the top of the machine, but I'm still tall enough to reach them without a step-stool. Come back in a few years when I've shrunk some more, and we'll see!

Door frame is 79 talk by 28 or 29 wide. There is also an hvac in this tiny laundry room. Must stack.

A-ha! That clears that up. Sorry I harped on it.

    " building in Toronto. "

Since you're in Canada, you may want to look at Gorenje washers and dryers. I about 10 years ago I got a Gorenje stacked pair to replace my 12 year old LG pair, and they were terrific - I wanted to replace the LG units with a smaller (24") pair, which limited my options. I only had them about 3 years before I moved (and left them behind) but they did a good job and showed no signs of problems at that point. If I had limited space and wanted a compact set, I'd go that route again. (They make vented and condenser dryers.)

    @Josie White

Largest bedding we have is queen size. Washing king size would be iffy, especially for a comfortor. If the comfortor was filled with down/feathers, then I think it would be fine. Once wet down is a fraction of the size. If polyester, then I would guess it would be a gamble.

No regrets with the Miele. Good luck with the decision. Please post what you decided on.

Luna123456- Would you please share which models of machines you use? Considering
    Washer WXD160WCS Classic

    Dryer TXD160WP Classic

    For washers we own:

    WWH-860

    WXI-860

The above are virtually the same washer. The WWH-860 being released before the WXI-860.

    The dryer is a TXI-860.

I wanted the extra cycles, TwinDos and power wash on the upper models. All of them are one step down from the top model in the USA.

I don’t think you would be disappoonted if you went Miele. Make sure there is service in your area in the unlikely event you need it. Miele will get them fixediced, but if the servicer has to travel to come to you there can be more delay. That is true of any manufaturer though.

Thank you all for your help. We went the LG STUDIO WASHTOWER. Very happy so far.
