Is this possible-non permanent mudroom structure?

I don't want to spend a lot of money on building an addition, as I wouldn't get it back out of this home. I've put a lot of money into a house that needed a lot of fixing and there are still more pressing issues. HOWEVER, I would really like to be able to find a solution to this problem. I have no mudroom and no door that leads from my laundry room outside. My family room floors are getting ruined because when my dogs come inside from the rain or snow, there's no place to dry them off. My house is older and the rooms are narrow, so putting down a runner isn't possible, as it would cut right through the middle of the fam room.
I was thinking about changing the large window in the kitchen to a sliding door. If I do, would it be possible to use some type of non-permanent structure, to enter and exit to and from the yard, leading from/to the kitchen, without having a gap?
Or, is there some other, relatively inexpensive way to go about this?
