I think I'm seeing a grape vine in the tangle.

It is a tree sapling. My winter bud ID skills are atrophied so I don't know what kind tree. What trees readily self sow in your area?

Floral, I’m sure there are grapevines in the background (along with other undesirable vegetation). My brother and I have been trying to get rid of them for awhile. Sadly, our intervention is largely triage so we miss a lot. However, I doubt that the plant is a grapevine, at least not one that I’ve seen in that garden.

Christopher, I’m not familiar with what trees self-sow in this area, but maybe I can figure it out. Or wait until it leafs out.

The pictures give a pretty good view of the stem, winter bud and leaf scar. Someone can ID it from that. I'm leaning towards a Hickory.
