Need to seal under gas fireplace. Help.

I have a gas fireplace that is directly on floor. But there is a gap between it and the floor ( about 2 inches or a little more). Behind its wall is the garage and under it is the crawl space. I suspect that mice are entering the house from under it. Is there a way to close the opening safely? What should I use?

I inspected even further by opening the screen cover and it looks like the opening is bigger than the fireplace inserted, so there are huge gaps right and left, too. How do I seal those gaps safely? What should I use to seal them?

The gap could be for combustion air(?). I'd seal any gaps on the garage/crawlspace area.

I was thinking the same thing. Do you have the documentation on the fireplace to see if this is meant to be a combustion intake? That would determine how it should be sealed or blocked with a screen. Even if you were able to seal it, you still need to address the mouse problem.

The remote sensor is right above the gap. There are no gaps in the garage. Crawlspace is too small/low to enter and check though inspector didn't find any cracks in crawlspace (but we were not looking for mice openings at that time). There is a closed chimney for an old stove which is not sealed from top of home. However, the fireplace chimney was found to be closed with a screen from top.
