completely paralyzed

We had this wallpaper installed at the onset of COVID and it completely overwhelms me. My husbands loves it but find it incredibly difficult to style. We ordered two table lamps from RH which should give it more warmth. The trim is suppose to get painted a dark grey with purple undertones in high gloss. I’m at a loss for a rug. All the colors are so heavy. Any suggestions/guidance would be immensely appreciated.

The room is headed towards a smoky glamorous vibe… I don’t know if you’ve got any Crystal in here anywhere?? but that also comes to mind. And mirrors. It might bring light in in a different way other than white colors.

    Dark trim and crystal barware!

Love the moody direction you are headed.  A couple rug ideas...

Thanks for the validation. Moving fwd with dark trim with more confidence 🙌🏻. I found a mirror I like from RH to go over the side table but decided to wait until after painting trim to see the vibe. Thanks for the crystal suggestion! Will def add a swanky decanter. We have one crystal cigar ashtray but not visible in the photo.

Awesome room! Love it! Dark trim. Don’t back track now. Agree on different pot for plant, might add a couple more for a grouping. A gold bar cart would be cool too.

Consider a bar cart if you want a after dinner setting or any entertainment zone. Some ideas.

Agree with going dark, makes the room more edgy and less safe. Lucky you to have a designated drinking room! We are awaiting pics of your fully curated sanctuary.

Not a pro. I agree on changing the trim color. Great suggestions re bar cart and a light rug for...balance. Your room reminded me of some of the art deco lounges from the 40s/50's. Swanky velvet or silk look curtains would soften the windows.
I also saw some vintage posters. If the art is solid colors on a light background, and not a print, it can work against the neutral wallpaper.
You could do floor lamps or sconces that can dim, glasses and mirrored accessories for the credenza.
Pros? How am I doing? Hope this helps.

A mirror or some photos with large white mattes would also add some balance. I like your cocktail lounge!

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but good lighting will improve the look of the room. Try table and floor lamps to add to the atmosphere.

Love the wallpaper and that you’re leaning in on the moody vibe with the darker trim — a cozy room for drinking is perfection 🤩

I was thinking the same as @Diana Bier Interiors, LLC that adding some lamps could make a big difference. They would give you a "moody" sort of lighting where it would brighten it up without taking away the intended dark/moody atmosphere.

Love the idea of a bar cart or some gold metallic touches. For art… I really like the idea of black and white photographs framed up with a white mat and a black edge frame. I’m not crazy about the idea of something with colour on the walls I’m not sure why. Doesn’t quite suit the vibe. An art deco poster could work as someone has suggested above.

This is a bold, dramatic space, yet oddly classical and I love it. So refreshing to see something different on Houzz. Lean into the dark, glossy trim. Your husband knows what he is talking about. I would style with pops of brass and a rug that has texture and movement. I really like Lisedv's mock up below. They nailed it. I would consider a mirror above the credendza.

Lighting is a plus for any room. Is there a ceiling light? A low profile, dimmable light there could help enhance the design of the room. A cool arc floor lamp would lend light and drama. A lamp on the console for ambient light would be a 3rd layering of light and perhaps a wall art light over some art more subtle lighting. Here are some coordinating selections. 1. Ceiling light that is dimmable; 2. Arc lamp for evening drama. 3. Picture light for over art. 4. Floor torchiere to wash light in a corner. 5. A floor uplight to create interest on wall near plant. 6. A moon lamp for buffet.

Dark trim for sure and continue the look in your accessories. I wouldn't get too large a rug, but something unique.

Looking at the idea board above I noticed the abstract. That could also work very well. I just wouldn’t use a sweet toned landscape in there. But I could definitely see the right abstract breaking up some of the pattern on the wallpaper.

Anyway I love the direction of this room! It was a bold move doing that wallpaper, (must’ve taken a leap of faith) but it was a move that’s definitely put the room up several notches, visually. I’m excited to see what else you do with the space. A thread you might like to check out for someone who uses lots of mood and drama in their home is DD Deco. Unfortunately I don’t have the link but maybe somebody here does.

    Following…

Also following…such an interesting room! I would have gone with the white trim to show off the paper, but I definitely get” the look” and vibe of the dark lacquer. Another option would be to use a medium color lacquer that is repeated in the rug you choose . This would still give the dark, exotic moody vibe of an English smoking room ,but still contrast the wallpaper. You might consider painting the white immediately ioutside of this room ,as well. What else is out there and how will it flow with this room ?

Thank you ALL so much for the feedback!! This room is definitely suppose to feel moody with Art Deco vibes. The ceiling lights are on a dimmer but I ordered 2 table lamps from RH, hopefully arriving this weekend. Agree on the wall art and mirror. We found a mirror but waiting to see the trim painted before ordering. Definitely will follow any rug advice, the hardest piece in my opinion.

These are the lamps I ordered

@niccidhg the room is at the entrance. So you walk into the foyer and to the left is the parlor/drinking room/smoking room and to the right is the dining room.

I think you may prefer a shaded light. For the look you want overall. Like an opaque shade lined either in white or silver but black on the outside.

Such an interesting room. So fun! Rugs are hard and stocks are incredibly low. So wait til you find the perfect one. Consider repeating colors of wallpaper in rug. Size it so at least front legs of furniture are on rug. Keep us posted on your progress. Love your room!

Purple chairs would go good with beige/gold/tan/pink

    Some option here

If I had a moody drinking parlor, I would kick my shoes off at the door and scrunch my toes in a soft white flokati rug while I got snockered!

Your furnishings are modern, but the paper is an Indochine toile. I like the search term Indochine for you better than others, which might include (Grand Millennial, chinoiserie, chippendale, Asian, etc) those others are usually done in brighter, less moody spaces. Your colors lend to a darker, more sophisticated application. You can still search those terms for inspiration and ideas for general ideas that you can adapt to your colors. Generally speaking, this style loves to layer lots of luxurious patterns and textures that hint at traveling the orient and curating eastern artifacts liberally. It usually seems less color coordinated and unintentional. Try these photos as a loose example of what I mean. Luckily, it’s one of the most personal and customizable decor styles! The trick is to not hold back. I found so many great examples, but I don’t want to flood your post with them unless you ask for more.

This so amazing to see! Thank you. What do you guys think of the Stark Studio Rug - Nessa Animal Print in Gray/Ivory? Is that too light?
Another idea is putting a black rug and then a Loloi II Cowhide in ivory/charcoal - layered look.

Rugs are so hard, so big, and can look different depending on lighting. Not as easy to return which gives me so much hesitation.

The Stark Nessa is quite “stripped” looking and a more uniform look would appeal more. How about this animal tiger look? The wall pattern is large so rug pattern best less in scale would keep wallpaper central feature. With a coffee table, layering a rug would create tripping hazard so I wouldn’t recommend that. If one could fit in another part of the room, that could work. Just keep out of traffic areas.

@kensingtonnyc, curious about the answer to @palimpsest question above about the wallpaper: Is this white on navy hemp or silver on black sateen?

Oh sorry! I missed the question. It’s silver on black sateen

Thanks - it's so gorgeous! (I found a rug at the Design Republic in Shanghai that I think would be amazing, but they also don't let you shop online.

    Hope you find your rug.)

In a room like this, I would want drapes, I think, and I would match the background of the paper for the drapes, and trim in aubergine to coordinate with the chairs. The carpet picks up the silver in the paper. I think it's difficult to hang representational art on thematic paper without getting a little trite, I might go with dark abstracts instead.

Just look how much your room has inspired us! I can't wait to see it unfold.

@palimpset this is amazing! THANK YOU!! I will look for this rug! Agree on drapes. Aubergine trim scares me but the color I think I am painting is Witching Hour by Benjamin Moore, it has purple undertones. I returned the pillows - green with pinkish/purple snakes. Will keep hunting. Pauillac lamps arrived today. 100% need a mirror and art. Will look for dark abstract, as suggested. Will post a picture in a 2-3 weeks when trim is painted and hopefully find a rug. Thank ALL so much

I can see almost every one of these accessories in your space, especially the crushed velvet curtains. Don’t hyper focus on matching everything. Introduce more colors and textures.

….since the white won’t be there , this could be an alternative option, in case the rug selection doesn’t work out. I just came across it and thought it worth still sharing. Will look forward to seeing your room unfold.
