New siding - 2 options!

last modified: 4 years ago

We have to redo our siding which is a big blow since it's 7 years old and cement board so should have lasted much longer. The silver lining is that I never liked the front of our house or the color so I get to change those!I need to decide between Option 1 (regular siding) or Option 2 (board & batten accents). Either one would fit in the neighborhood. Option 2 costs $1000 more. Ignore colors in pictures as the house will be painted one for, not multi as pics show.Stone can't change right now. Landscaping under window will change soon hopefully!Thoughts on which option?!?

Current house. "Fake stucco" panels on front. Just not my style.

#2,,all day long. the extra 1K is worth it.

when you get around to color choices, let us know.

your garage doors need some carriage hardware, (window inserts would also be nice)

larger lights in place of what's there

Address needs to be bigger too.

Nice house. just needs some tweaking.

Thanks Beth! I forgot, garage doors will be changed (thanks hail storm!) Roof has also changed. Basically a new house on the exterior thanks to hail and the siding malfunction!

Your other ideas are great. We did have a color consultation and it was hard to pick a color with the stone. Wish we could change the stone but with the siding expense, that just isn't a priority! We didn't build it so it's nice we can start changing some things we don't like!

With the right color siding the stone will look fine...it’ll look nice. Don’t sweat.

I like the board and baton as well. Option 2 💖

nice. get some good looking doors!

these first 3 are some of my fave styles. and the darker color will look great w/your stone

notice this one w/the white/neutral stone and white siding. dark trim too

    basic door w/decent look.

stone looks fine. plenty of colors you can work with.

post a close up of the stone and the colors you were given.

few styles like your home w/the two sidings/stone

Beth, thank you! You have been faster extremely helpful! She suggested BM Kingsport Gray or BM Revolutionary Storm. Both remind me of your first color suggestion. She said our stone was making her work hard to get a good color!

have you tried applying a sealer to that stone? It will darken and enrich the color. (I have the black/gold one on my front and sealed it) Try it in a hidden spot and see if you like the color change. you'll need an enhancing sealer. 511, aquamix are good.

yes, your stone colors lean on the brown side of gray with a bit of taupe thrown in for good measure!

here are some neutrals that would work, with her two colors below.

I don't like the Kingsport. wrong tone.

a darktaupe gray color would be nice

I actually like this Mt Etna color for the dark contrast.

    or, what about this one?

Abalone and Smoke embers are a nice warmer gray. I actually custom mixed both of them and got a nice color. shown here on the wall.

    some others

    .

see what you like, get some samples, and seal the stone to see if you get a diff color.

I've never heard about sealing the stone! I may need to try it before the painters come (they won't come for a few months until it's warm enough so I have time!)

if you do end up applying it, use a cheap paintbrush. foret trying to use a rag! don't drench it, just enough for it to penetrate but not leave a residue. if it does, wipe off w/a rag within a few minutes.

Not sure if this helps but just found the two colors I mentioned on my house. I forget which one is which (have it written down somewhere) your thoughts on this two? I painted the trim to help get a better visual

    Option 2!!

Option 2 is well worth the extra money. I hope you consider some of the darker, richer colors for the body of the house.

Lindsey, did you see all the color combos I put together for you in my last comment? not sure if you got see them.

now that I see your stone in brighter light, it has a lot of pink/taupe tones to it. while I like the dark charcoal, that particular one may have a bit too much yellow in it. (was it Kendall?)

you see the how these taupe/pink tone grays blend a bit better? I pulled the dark blue gray from the stone for the accent color (who in the world picked that red color???)

and here's another one. you see how the darker Dovetail color has a bit more taupe to it and plays w/the stone ? the blue gray on the front door is stunning and pick up those cooler bits in the stone.

in fact, this whole pallete would work.

This one too (these are BM)

And I love these other two shades paired w/this blush front door and a bright white. this would be so pretty if you want more of a monotone look.

I would do this, consider painting the tall tower a diff color. if you do all dovetail, do the tower in white. or vice versa.

I like option 2 as well.

If I may ask - what was the brand of the siding that is no good? I would have thought a cement board siding would have lasted much longer than that!

Well I am the outlier here….I think that option 2 overemphasizes the tallness of the center area because of the vertical battens. Some of the photos already posted here show more detail in the exterior which breaks up all those lines. I would study those and consider them if you have the $$ !

Hi Beth, I've jotted all your color suggestions down so come spring, I can go out and put some samples up. It is very appreciated and really helps me! THANK YOU! My husband isn't on board with multi colors (other than trim color and door color being different than the house), does that change your mind at all? I wish you were local, I'd pay you without thinking twice to come over and go over everything in person!! You have a great eye!

Debbie- It's Maxiplank (now owned by Allura). It should have lasted MUCH MUCH MUCH longer but there is a known issue. The class action lawsuit isn't applicable to us as ours was manufactured in a facility that wasn't listed in the lawsuit even though we have the exact same issues. The frustration is real. We obviously are going with a different brand now!

Here's a house similar to yours. I don't know what colours you're opting for but the one on the picture shows more trim than on your Options 1 & 2. Did you consider doing your gables in shingles (all shingles no cut-out at the top) with the remainder of the house in horizontal planks? It would make them stand out and give a different texture that fits with the architectural details of the house. They can be done in a different colour or same as the main colour and separated with a wide plank at the bottom of the gable. Just a suggestion...

Thanks everyone for your help! The siding is done and we went with Option 2. The new siding/old trim/garage doors haven't been painted yet so it isn't the finished look but we already love it and can't wait for it to be completely done later this Spring! Appreciate everyone's feedback when I posted, it helped me decide!

We finally got our house painted and thanks to a lot of you, I started exploring more color options than my original ideas! Thank you to everyone who provided ideas and feedback! We went with SW Pewter Green and SW Natural Linen for the trim (we wanted Shoji White but had to take the stone into account and it was too white). I added the before picture from when we bought the house and we are so happy with the updated look!

    Really nicely done! Updated!

Hi Beth, it's definitely Pewter Green! I read up on the color and what I read is SOOO true - It takes on different colors in different lighting. In the morning sun, our house looks very green and as the day goes it looks more dark gray and sometimes has a blue undertone! It's kind of fun to see it with different looks throughout the day!
