Replacing hallway carpeting

I want to replace old hallway carpeting with vinyl flooring because it gets a lot of traffic I have hardwood floors in my living room and the salesgirl at the flooring store said I probably should not go with a wood look for the hallway Now I am in a tizzy I attached a picture so you can see what Im dealing with Any suggestions would be appreciated

I agree no wood look and why not do the same flooring in the hallway. BTW a bit of info as to where this hallways is would be helpful . If it is an entry you could do a tile look vinyl

My house is a small rancher The hallway leads to the bathroom and three bedrooms Its not an entry Actually the salesgirl did recommend a tile look vnyl The floor in the living room was there when we bought the house so I don’t know what it is I thnk it would be tough trying to match it

I would use the same wood flooring used elsewhere.

Hardwood is meant for heavy use unless wetness is an issue. We have three large dogs and don’t remove our shoes when we come in and our 65 year old hardwood floors look great. I would install hardwood to match your existing floors and put down a runner rug if you’re concerned about foot traffic.

If you do go with carpeting again you need to buy a different type than the plush that is usually put in bedrooms. It sounds like you are working with a good person at the flooring store. She should be able to recommend something appropriate. Otherwise, a tile look vinyl would work.

We all agree to no wood look vinyl. I agree with Kandrew.

I do like the look of Coretec vinyl tiles. There are many other brands as well.

I would not do carpet again in a high traffic area. Unless you do low pile commercial grade carpet, which I don't think you want there, it looks dirty for years.

Another idea of course is porcelain tile.

My first choice would be to try to match the hardwood in the living room for the hallway. I’d worry that going from hardwood (living) to vinyl (hallway) to carpet (bedrooms, presumably) would be too many transitions and feel a bit patchwork.

Although you would need to refinish the existing wood, matching shouldn't be a problem for a good floor guy. They will remove the transition board and cut back existing pieces to weave in new wood.

@pgranieri54 Your new flooring will likely darken a little bit as it ages, so I wouldn't be surprised if ends up being the same darkness as your current floor.
