It's a bit difficult given the amount of detail provided but it looks a lot like some sort of upright sedum/hylotelephium in its winter dress.

Can you provide any info on how it looks at other times of the year?

I wondered if it might be sedum and i think you’re correct. I realized that ive seen the same dormant plant in a neighbors yard. I also remember being surprised they had sedum flowering in thier shady lot. Thanks! you all are the best.

how about a pic close enough to actually see it ....

and while your out there.. root around near the crown.. and see if you see anything that looks like a cabbage ... or a rosette ... snap a pic of those ... perhaps any dead leaves or the plant ???

It does look like H. telephium. I'm not sure seeds were collected.

Agree, looks like autumn sedum. I don't know if the "seeds" are viable -- never had a seedling around my clumps after 16 years. Easy to buy online.

It will grow easily from any bits of stem or portions of basal rosette if you can get them.
