elevated kitchen island

Hi, adding an island to my kitchen using 35" stock base cabinets as the base with a quartz top. I would like to increase the height for closer to a bar height with a 2x4 subframe. I've seen this done using wall cabinets but not with base cabinets. Any reason this wouldn't work besides my wife being worried about finding the right height stools?

    Any appliances there?

You only need this island for seating and serving? Because a bar height countertop will be too high for prep work.

Yes. just for seating. Separate from kitchen prep.

In our last house we had all the base cabinets and the dishwasher & stove. raised up on 2x4s. We used the 2 not the 4 . I am tall and loved them. So yes, it can be done.

I had a bar height and chopped it down to a counter height. By doing so, the kitchen seems so much larger. Using base cabinets and adding a 2x4 frame for the bar height is possible (and easy); however, please reconsider. Put a twin side mattress on its side with a couple pillows stacked on top to get a feel for the height.

It can be done, but just because it can doesn't mean it should be. Your breakfast area needs a table height table for people to sit. Not a perch on a stool in a bar and hope you dont fall off thing. Super horrible idea on multiple points.

Thank you for the viewpoints everyone.

Sarah Richardson does this often. Barb height hides the kitchen mess from guests while maintaining the open concept, a must if you make the huge mistake of having a sink or stove top in your island. It also gives you a place to add electrical outlets. Anything can be raised by adding a footing base, hidden by a toe kick.

No one does this as a substitute for a kitchen table, which is what the OP wants to do. Its not even ”an island” because it wont be in the prep zone. Its just an unsafe expensive obstacle to comfortable family gathering.

If you go ahead with your plan, be sure to make your bar counter top wide enough for a dinner plate, glassware, etc. Unless you are truly using it just as a bar!

Sorry Verbo, I never said this was a substitute for a kitchen table. I never actually got into location or its actual use because my original question wasn't about placement, just structural.

@User Not sure what we're going to do yet. Still deciding.

Welcome to the land of people making incorrect assumptions and getting advice about things you didn't ask about.

2x4s hold up houses, so I'm pretty sure they can hold up cabinets and a countertop.

The toe kick will be 8" instead of 4" in that part of the kitchen only, which may be a little distracting visually.
