Tiny primary bedroom refresh — with Before & Afters

I’m so sick of this bedroom! It’s the primary bedroom and I wish it was more warm, natural, softer, maybe spa-like.

The bedroom is just off the kitchen, which is the first room past the main door, so everyone who walks into the house can see the bed where it is now. Feels a bit invasive.

I would love your opinions & help!!

Here are some ideas:

-Move the bed under the window?

-New bed? (West Elm’s Norre bed would fit below the window trim)

-New bedside tables and/or lamps? (I also like these tables but don’t know how they’d look IRL)

-New bedding?

-New wall colour?

-Options for the narrow 23.5” closet door? (Currently covered by sheers)

-I like the plant-dyed piece that is over the bed — is it too wide though?

Note: If I put the bed beneath the window (it’s north-facing), there would be max. 18” on each side of the bed. It won’t fit on either of the other two walls.

Thank you all for your help back in February! I’ve finished the room, and here are the Before & Afters. Photos are hard to get in such a small space, but hopefully it gives you the idea!

Same bed, new art. Same sheets, new duvet cover & blankets. And a new cleaner wall colour (SW Shell White).

Mango wood drum bedside tables to soften the edges; salt lamps on dimmers to provide enough light for reading, and an Apple Homepod Mini to use as alarm clock & speaker.

Cellular blinds instead of the sheers. And springtime outside, instead of winter.

Tidy new closet door, and fewer objects on the walls (nothing except the two paintings above the bed).

And last but not least, those alcoves are gone! The photo doesn’t do it justice, but now the wall just disappears, and the room feels bigger.

Again, thanks for all your help! I really like how it turned out. If you see anything else that it needs or any style faux pas (… yes, like the even number of paintings above the bed), I’d appreciate your suggestions.

I believe it is quite beautiful. The only things I would consider removing are the mirror and flower print and relocate the salt lamp to hide the cord. Possibly put a large mirror on the flower print wall and soften the shades on the lamps, possibly with a rattan. I would use the alcoves to display my most beloved items or create an alter, if spiritual. You’ve done a great job— it really is serene.

Aw, thanks Liz! I guess I think it needs a change because the last few years have been really hard, and I don’t feel like a light-pink flowery person anymore.

Changing lampshades to rattan is a great suggestion, as are your other ideas. Thanks again!

Try replacing the medium-dark pink things with blue or green. Or try more classic white. Changing the comforter cover to something completely different could be a good way to start a non-flowery color scheme. The room's walls could be painted once you have a new color scheme for the bedding.

Fall in love with new bedding and let that fabric guide your paint decision. I like it under the window. You might gain some extra space if you get rid of the bed frame, use a simple metal or "hollywood" bed frame, and use a spread instead of a coverlet, so it will fall to the floor and hide the metal legs without the complication of a bed skirt. I would keep things light and bright.

Why not try changing the bedding, pillows, and wall decor. We might suggest removing all that's on the walls aside from what is directly over the headboard. We don't mind the current placement of the bed, it just feels like there are aspects that might work better. Maybe also try to decultter the night stands. Here ares some of our bedroom designs which might aid you further.

Those bedrooms are beautiful! And thanks for the suggestions. I’ve already removed the mirror & small painting based on an above comment, and it looks much better. I also ordered new nightstands and a quilt, and have removed the dark pink throw & pillow - again, much better. I’ll post a photo when everything arrives to get some more advice, particularly on new lamps, and what exactly to do with those alcoves.
