I think shade is a bit too small but need more dimensions to confirm?. According to info at link, shade should be 1/3 of total height of lamp & twice as wide as base.. see link

If it was custom made for you, ask the maker to change the base to a hefty solid wood circle (graduated circles would be best) at least as high as the thickness of the post. Straighten the harp so the shade is centered.

What is the history of the lamp? It's unusual.

We purchased the lamp base at an antique auction because we liked it and it seemed to fit in with other decorative pieces in our home. It had no shade. A Decorator told me what size shade to purchase which I did. But, the base and lampshade do not look right to me so I was attempting to see see what I could do to improve the way it looks. I was hoping that perhaps a taller harp might improve the look.

Thanks for info. I think this is one of those lamps that calls for a more decorative shade than is common today. A patterned shade, either glass or fabric, would give it more presence. It just doesn't work to try to make it look ordinary. Take a look at some of the decorative shades in the antique lamp style websites. Here's a start:

That is an interesting suggestion. I believe I chose the fabric, the shape, and the style because I liked it and without consideration of what it would look like with my lamp post. Thank you.

You need a custom shade (best investment I've made in a lamp.) Visit a specialty lamp store and see if they have a service you can use.

Maybe a black shade, depending upon your decor.

Yes, I do like those shapes with the lamp. I have a similar but smaller lamp with an ivory shade in the room so I don't believe I would want the black shade

Regardless of color, I can see that the drum shaped shades with their heavier or wider tops, do balance the lamp base / pole much better than a tapered top.

IMO, no, lamps in the same room don’t need matching shades. It’s more important that each lamp has a shade that’s appropriate for it. Usually, all the lamps in a room would complement each other style wise. Full disclosure, as I post this, I’m looking at my great room with 4 lamps; 2 are a matched floor lamp & table lamp set with leaded glass shades, 1 other table lamp has a different lead glass shade shape & different base but is all same colors, & another floor lamp has a cream fabric shade. All 4 lamps have the same dark color metal bases. So, a complementary variety! I love them all & think my room looks great!
