Maybe use this for inspiration . I think the sails while looking cool are not practical since they allow the rain to slide down the sail in awkward places .

Maybe an open air breezeway from the bottom of the stair and the pool house. Might be awkward to try to cover or enclose the stair itself. Might now be so necessary as the building roof overhang provides some cover over the stair.
