Window with extra deep sill

We are planning an addition. I want to put a pocket door where the green line is, but it will make the wall extra deep next to the window.

I’d like to keep the window- any ideas on how to make this look nice/considerations?

Move the wall where the window is.

You might want to explain that. What will you use the pocket door for -- what opening will it close off?

It will be a double pocket door (glass in uppers) on a 7’ doorway to the living room from the kitchen.

I want to give separation sometimes when people are watching tv and someone busy in kitchen.

This is a view of the main living area. It’s a raised ranch style house. Living room @ the back is the addition.

Kitchen plan is Changing a bit from this drawing (no corner sink, swap fridge and range).

I don't know for sure but I think an extra deep window in that spot would look fine. It would be my reading nook.

Do be firm and don't let any designers or builders convince you that you don't really need the door or that it isn't practical or anything like that. Get that door. Been there, done the wrong thing. :)

Before you "Get that door" get a cost estimate. For a seven foot wide opening, you are going to most likely need at least a 14.5 foot structural beam, or equivalent, to support the roof/floor above.

There may be other structural issues to arise.

The opening is already planned isn't it? We're just talkin' doors. :P

There are aesthetic considerations as well as structural ones that Mark has pointed out. Has this addition already been built? Or are you still in the design phase? In order to have 2 pocket doors, you need room inside the walls on both sides of the opening. If you are adding wall thickness to the inside, this will affect the symmetry of the fireplace/bookshelf walls. You will also need to move that door on the right that leads to the stairway.

If you are adding the thickness on the outside, it will affect the exterior of the house and the stairway. Lots of things to consider. You might think about adding 2-3' French doors that open into the living room, making sure that you have enough room for them to open completely.

Have you considered the other wall beside the door? I can also suggest using by-pass doors in 2 panels or a barn door if you like that style. Both are surface mount and do not necessarily look farmhouse-ish if done differently. Hiding the track in both situations and painting the doors like the wall will hide them. Farmhouse design did not invent the barn door. There are many modern versions that can be hidden under a valance. This way you are not increasing the walls depth.

No. The door opening for pocket doors is twice as wide as the doors because of the pockets.

Except it's not, because we're talking about adding the door slots in front of the existing (or planned) walls and that's why the window ends up set deeply.

I was approaching it in a way that will not look odd.

Thanks for the feedback. We are still in the planning stage. Construction won’t start until late spring.

Our contractor suggested barn doors but I don’t really think it fits our aesthetic and I didn’t like the idea of them being exposed. I will look into more “traditional” options. French doors might work but I had liked clean look of the pocket and liked how they’re tucked away so we can hang art/etc on the walls.

We were going to built the wall out to accommodate the doors- not change the header as that would be a significant increase.

We were planning to move over the exterior door a bit, thanks for pointing out that detail.

Thoughts on making window/ nook part of the built ins?

Alternatively is there a double stacked pocket door (two pocket doors and one would slide over to encase on the wall section where the exterior door is?

That wall is just passageway to the backyard and wouldn’t offset the built ins?
