Does it look ok to mix a dresser such as the St James from RH in a grey oak with painted nightands in a similiar color? So for example the nightands would be in the pumice finish from Ethan Allen. Bed is ivory fabric. I just do not want everything to match. Or would you just get dresser from Ethan Allen as well but maybe in a coordinating finish such as Earl Grey.

I think a rule on mixing wood tones is that no more than two tones in the room, and each pieces should have one other piece in the same tone. And the other wood tone should have more that two pieces in the room....dominant wood tone on most of the pieces, and recessive wood tone on two of the pieces. So the night stands could be one color, everything else could be another wood color, and the bed could be completely upholstered.

A mix would be my choice, more interesting/creative and less boring with the injection of both light and darker shades. Pull everything together with accessories.
