Here is a picture of the one I am considering. One can face the opening toward the wall. Not the greatest decoration but more appealling than an open cat box.

ha ha Ivan likes sitting on top while DH cleans the box. Aspen waits until it's been cleaned, then uses it. Our cats would destroy that plant....they'd mistake it for a toy.

Lucille, my DD has that one (from Chewy) and is very happy with it. She texted me a picture, but I can’t find it. Her apt is very small, with two cats, and she has this in a corner of the living room. Her cats are young and very active/playful, she says they haven’t bothered the plant at all. I know our two would, though!

They also loved the box it came in. :D

Navi is getting old (me too) and doesn't play with my real plants or with most of my stuff. She will bat around a crumpled ball of paper or aluminum foil, and play in boxes and wrapping paper, but that is about the extent of her playing. As I recall Nicole your kitties are still kittens, and are probably a handful.

@lucillle.....it goes waaaaaaay past that. The cat box was their ONLY toy. They'd never seen a ball or catnip mouse(they have 3 baskets FULL of toys NOW). Ivan would spend 20 minutes digging in the cat box....for exercise...to relieve boredom. Now if I'm talking to him sweetly...claws-in...he starts digging....in place....while I coo to him. It's cute....but not if you know where the behavior comes from. ♥ ♥ ♥ I'm sure the plant will be fine at YOUR house....:0) It's adorable! ♥

Jasdip, I hear what you’re saying. In my DD’s case, with two cats, she has another (open) box in another room. She told me they use the covered one more than the open one.

Of course that’s just anectodal evidence, and all cats are different … I’m not arguing with you. Just sharing experiences.

Jinx great idea, I can leave the current open box in operation when the new one arrives and let Navi choose.

Lucille, I tried the one with the fake plant and sent it back. It was made of very thin, cheap, bendable plastic and the top didn't fit well onto the bottom. The round shape seemed like it would have been harder to clean.

I ended up with the Petphabet Jumbo litter box and have been happy with it. I needed one with a clear cover because one of our cats harasses the other, and being able to see out makes the other one feel safe.

I have a jumbo covered box. I removed the door, because the cats don't like it.

We used this exact cabinet for years. Kept it in the laundry room. Our cat was about 8 when we got it. Worked great.

Personally I would never use a covered litter box. No matter how much we clean the litter box, cat's sense of smell is so much stronger and sensitive than ours, the smell would be awful for them.

In 20 plus years that's never been an issue. The box is scooped multiple times a day.

I had a covered litter box, because it was in kind of an open area. But i found it a pain to take the top off to scoop. When we were able to put the box in a more discrete spot, I left offthe cover. When we got a new box, I got a high-sided one to cut down on high-flying litter. It is lower in the front so it’s easier to get in.

I look at wome of the enclosed ones and know thqt my cat wouldn’t be able to turn around, and I fear he’d just hang his back end out the door!

jupidupi, that is an awesome box!! I've never seen one with a clear top but that seems like the very best of both worlds. It's covered but it looks open. Perfect. Almost makes me want to get another cat!!!

The top of the one we use every day lifts off easily, but the one we use as a second box during the Christmas season is a pain. You need 2 hands to lift it off, because one of the tabs inevitably engages.

Both of our cats are large -- 13 & 16 lbs. Neither has difficulty moving around inside the box.

Amazon sells round 4 inch high feed buckets that other cat owners (maybe a better word is caretakers, no one really owns a cat) have found fit exactly into the round enclosed litter box, so it can be lifted out and more easily cleaned.

The litter box we used inside the cabinet I posted was like that...high sides/back and low in front. Not sure it mattered but our cat was very small, never over 8 pounds. When we first got the cabinet I put her litter box inside and left the door open for a few days. She took to it with no problem at all.

The cat box at our house is in one side of the guest bath vanity (a cat access was cut in the side of the cabinet, next to the toilet). He has a large, shallow plastic litter box that you can buy for about $3 at Target, Amazon, Chewy, etc. We buy a new one at least once or twice a year (and the old ones go into gardening service).

The kitty we had before liked to stand up a little and spray backwards, so we used to buy plastic, legal-sized file boxes at Staples.

The biggest issue we've had is finding boxes that are smooth enough on the inside to make scooping clean and easy. We had a few commercial litter boxes that had support structures molded on the inside corners and you just can't scoop around those.

My new litter box just arrived. Was not hard to put together but the plastic plant is pitiful. I might look for some silk greenery. I ordered the pan that others had recommended in the Amazon ad that sits down in the box, I chose the 6.5 gallon pan because it comes up a little higher. I will put the litter in as soon as it gets here and then let Navi choose which one she wants.

The after-dinner talk at Thanksgiving here was about the Litter Robot. Two people at the table had the device and raved about it. Apparently you can find them used and discounted on Facebook Marketplace.

We’ve had multiple cats for 20 years and have only ever used lidded boxes and none of them have minded. We had an open box for ~ 2 weeks with the newest kittens and heck no. What a mess!

Depends on the cat's disposition. I had an old ailing cat, who needed low sides; too hard to step over otherwise. I currently have a young cat who hates the litter staying in the box, and she flings it everywhere. Thus, a covered box. She also hates for it to have a liner in it. Skinny and deep box, full of litter, makes her happy.

Dogs are so different even they too have sensitive scent detection.. Mine adores strong scents, and studiously sniffs grass and plants for evidence of any eau de pee from dogs who have previously been in the area. If the scent is disgusting enough she will want to roll in it.

I have one covered cat box and a legal size plastic bin for my cats. Seemed to work well for a long time, but my one cat is getting older and she often urinates out of the open side of the plastic bin. I put the box lid under the bin and luckily the urine is contained by that. Other than that, they have no problem with covered or uncovered boxes. I will have to figure out something else for the older cat though.

@rob333, I can sympathize; I miss our girl, too. She's been gone for 3 years, and the litter cabinet I posted is still in the laundry room.

I have two steel litter boxes. They clean much easier than plastic boxes. The plastic boxes are porous and absorb the odor and are hard to scrub clean. The steel litter boxes clean up like new and don't hold the odor.

The very best litter box set up I ever had was a Premier Litter Box Enclosure. Inside, there was enough room for a large box, plus room for the litter, bags and scoop. The outside was carpeted and they used it as a scratching post. Really well built --it was so sturdy that we used it as a bench. It contained all of the smell. People didn't even know there was a litter box inside. My daughter used a covered litter box. Then her cat suddenly began not using it at all. Because it wasn't covered she hadn't noticed he wasn't urinating as usual..he was sick. After she got him well they never went back. She wanted sooner feed back he was ill.

I don't understand how a covered box didn't get opened daily or weekly. I know what the box typically looks like, and I'm pretty sure I would've noticed after a time or two of less material?? Fairly sure.

Pursuant to Jenn Powers' post above re the Modkat - I'm probably one of the few who have both the Modkat Flip and the Modkat XL models. I liked the Flip best, but unfortunately my cat does better with the XL - so the XL it is.

Modkat boxes are intended for use with liners. These are very tough, like heavy-duty plasticized tarps, and last 3-6 months. Note you have to be careful which liners to order - their default is the top-entry liner, whereas the Flip model only takes the side entry liner. The XL can use either one, but my cat prefers side entry.

The XL is harder to clean than the Flip. The fold-back top is common to both, but on the XL it sits on a molding that snaps on top and holds the liners. I find the molding annoying as I use a large metal scoop and I often bump the handle into the molding, spilling the used litter back into the box.

The Flip's cover just sits atop the box, held on by plastic posts. To clean the box, just flip the cover halfway open and scoop out - no molding to get in the way.

Both Flip and XL are the same length/width/height - BUT the XL is deeper by almost 1" because the Flip has molded legs, whereas the XL sits flat to the floor. OTOH the XL has handholds that make it easy (if heavy when filled with litter) to lift, compared to the Flip.

My cat does not crouch when he urinates, so if he's facing inwards, a steady stream of urine shoots right out the entry, LOL! For some reason the deeper XL makes him scoot a little further inside. It may be because the XL has a very nice "ledge" - a 4"-long plastic clip that holds the liner flat to the entry and helps the cat step into the box.

All models come in Medium Grey, White or Black. They are completely smooth inside with slightly rounded corners, substantial and very good looking.

Expensive, but has proven worth it. Nothing else I tried worked, and I was getting tired of mopping that section of flooring.

Also, I did not find any litter mats that were truly waterproof, so I sprang for a good quality rubber-backed doormat (the Waterhog from Plow and Hearth, to be specific). Flatter to the floor, very durable, hoses off and dries fast.

I guess I am not understanding how a catbox being covered or not would make a difference. I scoop daily, and if there were no clumps I certainly would be alerted.

Pretty Litter...tells if a cat is sick. Maybe that's the thing to use....? Or...use it intermittently.

The Grand Kitty Box Experiment is now set up. The boxes are only a few feet from each other to try to minimize any home geography variable. I figure on a week for the experiment to see if there is a preference for one or if she chooses to use both. May the best box (for Navi) win!

Maybe cats just like people are different.

We have had threads here about perfumes, air fresheners, and the like. Some here say that such scents leave them in misery, but perfumes and air fresheners are I'm sure sold by the millions so some people must enjoy them.

There is at least one post above where the cats do have a choice and use both.

I'm thinking that just like people 'choice' is the magic word. If Navi likes both of them, they will both stay. If she chooses only the covered one, I will get rid of the open one. If she chooses only the open one, I will use the covered one as fancy storage for packages of cat litter.

Murraysmom, I think that Navi's choice over a day for the new box was enough to convince me. Had the results continued to be mixed I would have let the experiment continue. I thank everyone for posting.

An old thumb rule is you need one more litter box than you have cats. Has worked for many with decades of cat ownership.
