NW, yes, the dog uses the paths with occasional deviations. When everything is leafed out, we’re good. In spring, I put up little metal fence segments in the areas she has claimed during winter. I think it helps that natural water flow created the paths, so the feet tend to follow.

What lovely companion plants. Now I have many ideas of what to add to the garden for a little more color and shape.

I really like all the interplanting, something I need to work more on. I've been trying to mix in some Astilbe and Heuchera. But neither seems to last more than a few years, especially the Heuchera seems to die off after 2 or 3 years. I do a lot of annuals, like 8-10 flats every year in other beds but not mixed with the hostas.

old dirt..I saw a comment by a gardener in the UK..he considers his heuchera annuals..less disappointment viewing them as annuals Ha!..

old dirt, I have had some varieties heuchera live and multiply happily and others only live 1 season. Not sure if it is the location or variety.

Beth & old_dirt I believe it is the variety. Those of us in hot humid climates do better with Heuchera villosa hybrids.

I tried to include photos of companion plants in which a hosta was visible. However, I also grow lots of camellias (japonica, sasanqua, and hybrid). They provide a great, glossy, dark green shrub for my shade garden. At this time of year while the hostas are sleeping, I collected this bouquet from my garden today to give to my MIL. I could not bring myself to part with the sole remaining flowe of Christmas Candy camellia today. The various hellebores are wonderful this time of year, too.

I find Mt Cuba to be a great resource of info on Eastern North American natives.

The only Heuchera I can grow is Dale’s Strain, and that only in pots. It is a native NC seed strain. It died so fast in the ground every time I tried it there. It seems to want lots of water, but zero seconds of standing water. With my clay soil, moisture retention happens all too easily in wet weather.

I don't have half as many as any of you! Thanks for posting yours! Always love seeing your plants!

White Corydalis. This plant amazes me. Long blooming. Tougher than it looks.

I have just rekindled by love of heuchera! Here are 3 that I have had for a few years. Top left is a NOID; to the right of it is Tiramisu (a beautiful coloring in the spring, kind of orangy?, then turning to yellow); center is Forever Purple which the grubs got. I was able to salvage one stem. A shame. Top right is Bowles Golden Sedge.
