Help in decision on Appliances Thermador or Monogram

It's been awhile for me asking for advice on appliances...10 years, I believe but here we are again!

We are building a new home and have the opportunity to choose our appliances. I have used Gaggenau, Bosch Benchmark ovens, Miele and Bosch dishwashers, Thermador and Bertazzoni cooktops in our last two homes. I like all the appliances I have used, for their performance, durability and price points as applicable to the build I was doing.

At this point in time, I am leaning on Thermador cooking appliances (cooktop, swing door oven and speed oven) and Bosch 800 fridge because it has dual compressors, if I'm not mistaken, is the only free standing fridge to have (only Subzero offers dual compressors). Thermador has a the buy two get one free deal, thus a free dishwasher, which is enticing...but I do like the Bosch 800 series dishwasher for the performance and price.

As for the Monogram option, am comparing for cooking appliance performance and because the builder is putting in GE appliances and the cutouts are the same, thus saving time and money on adjustments to cutouts, especially cooktop if I can't get the builder to cutout to the Thermador dimensions. The Thermador has the on/off burners for simmer, which I am used to and has very good burner power and options. The Monogram has a bit more power and dual stacked burners. Both I think are pretty nice but interested in anyone who uses the Monogram cooktop to chime in. I currently have a 30" Thermador cooktop so can attest to the performance. The Monogram oven has a french door option, which I like, and I know the Advantium ovens are quite good, but any info on the 30" convection ovens would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for any advice and ideas!

One comment, a bit off topic…get a rangetop, instead of a cooktop. With rangetops, the knobs are off the cooking surface. They sit at your belly, so they don’t get grimy from food splatters. Makes cleaning a breeze.

We’ve had a Thermador rangetop for six years, and love it. Yeah, it doesn’t have a true simmer. But, like you said, we’re used to the on/off cycling…and it hasn’t affected our meals one bit.

Thermador dishwashers are made by Bosch, but they charge more for the Thermador name tag.

Love our Miele double ovens; best ovens I’ve ever used. Preheats in less than a minute, maintains an even temperature…and during cool down, the fan is so quiet, I don’t even realize its on.

    Here’s our rangetop:

@darbuka Thank you for your info and beautiful kitchen! Would love to have a rangetop, alas, the builder is doing drop in cooktop and I opted for pot drawers below, so I will stick with the 36 inch cooktop. Good news is with Thermador the knobs are in the front in a straight line so they don't take up any real estate from the cooktop surface. unlike other brands. I'm sure you love the Miele ovens, however, I am partial to swing doors and french door ovens; I'm only 5' tall so reaching in is hard over a hot oven door.

Rangetops can accommodate pots and pan drawers below, as that’s what I have…2 deep 36” drawers.

I understand the attraction of ovens with swing or French doors. Every brand should offer that option!

@AnneGracyGolden What did you end up choosing: Thermador or Monogram? I am also deciding between Monogram and Thermador 36" (ranges). I like rangetops as mentioned by @darbuka but don't have room to put oven without sacrificing counterspace.

I saw both all-gas range models in the showrooms and think that Monogram has a slight edge in burner performance and oven size (when compared to Thermador Pro Harmony, Pro Grand is equivalent to Monogram in many ways except the price!).

Thermador is said to be better for resale value. Though we aren't moving in the near future, does it make sense to just go with Thermador? Does anyone have feedback about either in terms of performance and reliability?

    Hi Sophia
I’m in the process of making the same decision you wrote above with the addition of Wolf as an additional choice. Have you made your choice yet and would you mind telling me how you came to your decision?

    Hi Corie,

After intense research I found a decent number of threads (recently on Houzz from early 2022) with numerous complaints about Thermador products failing and poor service when trying to find remedies. When buyers have issues, it seems that Thermador is doing a poor job of helping them. The deciding factor was that a friend who remodeled her kitchen with all Thermador appliances in Spring 2022 happened to share that she still cannot get help with her ”lemon” of a range oven that never worked properly. Neither the sales people nor Thermador have been willing/able to resolve her issue (Northern California/SF Peninsula). Even with the holiday promotions, I still didn’t feel comfortable spending $12K+(including a Thermador fridge) after seeing so many complaints ending with the phrase ”You have been warned.” There is so much to like about Thermador but I would hate spending so much knowing there is a fair risk of being stuck if I ever have a problem.

We considered Wolf and Miele all gas ranges. Wolf, while frequent touted as the ”best overall” range, is only offering the more advanced features with dual fuel. It seems Wolf has not made any improvements to the all gas ranges in years. Miele while lovely is underpowered if you compare the burner specs (which is my primary method of cooking). While I don’t expect it to be perfect, I chose the Monogram 36 all gas. In my opinion, it offers the best combination of features and power at this time and I cannot complain about the lower price tag. While I love the look of the Wolf signature red knobs, I think I will get most of what I need with the Monogram. The range will be installed next month so I am hopeful it will live up to expectations. Good luck in your search.

Sophia, curious how you like the monogram now that you’ve had it for a few months. i was looking at the Monogram but was concerned the height is slightly lower than our countertop.
