Windows and a bunch of clean white rags, small area at a time, spray and rub hard and repeat. Change rags frequently, repeating until the rag stays clean. But depending on what was used you may never get it off the floor and nothing, not even refinishing the floors completely is possible.

I am somewhat scared of using Windex on floors....especially after the vinegar mishap... anything else?

Use the original Windex, about the only thing that will work. Its going to be a lengthy process but it is the only way that you will get the crap off the floor.

You need stripper to remove the polish and get down to your original urethane finish. You could buy a container of commercial non-ammoniated wax stripper but they're usually sold in large quantities. A more viable option is to use an OTC wax stripper like Armstrong New Beginning. The recommendation was to do small areas at a time to avoid getting it down in the grooves. It would be best to apply sparingly with a sponge, let it work, then remove with sponges and clean water. Grout sponges are excellent for this type of work. If you have wet/dry vac it could be used after to suck up any residual water.

Start in an inconspicuous area to make sure there's no unexpected reaction and to determine how heavy it needs to be applied and how long it needs to sit. You know it's working when you rub it with your thumbnail and you can see it gelling. After removing the polish, use an approved cleaner like Bona. Some people believe Bona leaves a residue so I recommend they try Woodwise cleaner which can be purchased at a reasonable price in concentrate form.

You can find several posts on these boards where people followed his advice to use windex and they were thrilled with the results. Try it in an inconspicuous place until you're convinced. Hope he will clarify, but I believe you must get original version of Windex.

cleaning floors with windex

In looking at your pics again, is it possible the floors have just faded where there weren't protected by the rug? Maybe the finish is dulled simply from wear and tear and not from the products used to clean it? If so, the windex might not work, but it's definitely worth a try in case it does.

To me they look like they are showing wear.
