This and Purpurea have some of the best foliage of any of the "Chinas", though, to be fair, Papa is not "really" a "China" other than by looking sort of like one. Few "Chinas" have Gloire des Rosomanes, multiflora and Hiawatha behind them. His foliage IS really good, though. You really could consider it a dwarf, bushy, repeat flowering Hiawatha.

I know I'm a zone pusher by nature, but the hardiness rating (7b) on HMF seems awfully conservative considering its heritage. I don't grow GdR (I want to!), but Hiawatha and Old Blush are both bone hardy here in Z7a. Hmmm.

Jiminshermanoaks grew Papa quite nicely. His plant was easily 3.5' X nearly 5' wide. It was a dense mass of that lovely shiny foliage and was usually studded with clusters of those single red blooms. But he didn't prune heavily so your mileage may vary.

Mine is still quite small, but it's down on the hillside, where temperatures can really climb, and it doesn't seem to mind that at all.
