With the exception of the ice maker, quantity of shelves, and appearance, these are the same appliance. The Liebherr CS1640B is the same as the CS1640BL except the door is reversed.

Interesting! I figured they’d be similar but didn’t realize it was the same model. If the Miele came in a left hinge model it would be a no-brainer, so now I guess the question is whether the added shelves and ice maker are worth the hassle of trying to find someone to reverse the doors…

30 Inch Stainless Steel Counter Depth Bottom Freezer Refrigerator is four inches deeper without the handle but costs only $1469. Remember that all these refrigerators require space between them and the rear wall (1-1/2" for Liebherr; 2" for Miele-recommended).

Unfortunately we’re in a tight condo galley kitchen and those extra inches would definitely stick out. Also I’ve really enjoyed the Liebherr - other than the ice maker which was already broken when we bought our place I have been very impressed with it. I do wish it lasted longer than 15 years and that replacing a freezer compressor wasn’t $1700, but as long as the quality hasn’t deteriorated significantly over the past few years I’m kind of excited to have a new fridge.

Also I think I’m going with Miele. Our current fridge has 4 adjustable shelves, as does the Miele, but the Liebherr only has 3. We cook a lot as a family so having less fridge storage than now isn’t really a good option. Our Miele Experience Center put me in touch with the manager of a local appliance store who has been selling Miele for over 20 years and they have the fridge in stock (!) and he had no concerns about reversing the hinges so the stars seem to have aligned.

I too have a small, galley kitchen. The refrigerator cabinet is approx. the depth of the surrounding cabinets (24") ; the door adds 2". A 28"-deep refrigerator would probably have been too much.

@recordaras I’m curious which brand you decided on. I was also comparing the two brands but ended up installing the liebherr hcb1580 ~9mos ago. Freezer has already frosted over once and required a sensor replacement. A few months later it’s frosting over again and has a very audible freezer fan running constantly rather than cycling off. In hindsight I would’ve chosen the Miele or even looked into Fisher Paykel. Hope your remodel turned out well and you’re pleased with your fridge/freezer selection.

That’s not my understanding from the research I’ve done. Isn’t Miele sourced from Bosch? I had consultations with my local Miele and Liebherr showrooms. They might be made in the same factory but it doesn’t mean they’re the same.

I am unfortunately not super happy with the Miele. The ice maker needs to be replaced (and Miele service is painful even though we’re in the DMV area), the light is surprisingly dim and overall the build quality is much flimsier than the old Liebherr it replaced. There are also silly engineering issues that were not present with the older model like the left fruit/veggie drawer hits the left hinged fridge door when it’s open to 90 degrees. I wish repairing the old Liebherr had been an option, that thing was a tank!

And I’m 99% certain the fridge is manufactured by Liebherr based on the similarities with my previous model and the fact that both were manufactured in Austria.
