Does This nightstand work?

The bed is a Queen size platform bed in Mahogany (lots of red). The nightstand is a dark green but it seems very low. I have shams to make the bed look better, this is just to figure out the nightstand. Having a difficult time finding something to go with the reddish mahogany. Considered Navy but found this green one,

There is also a picture with green in it - might be too much green??

The green nightstand is way too short. You need something that comes up to the level of the mattress. Measure that, then start looking. A nightstand with some curves to echo the bed's headboard would be much better. Is the headboard new or vintage?

The bed is a contemporary take on a sleigh bed. The mattress is about 19” off the floor. The headboard is very high, higher than normal which throws off the perception a bit.

Even if the bed is a contemporary take on a sleigh bed, the color is traditional and the whole thing reads traditional, so the style of the green nightstand you showed is too modern to go with it. I'm not feeling the green or blue. Maybe a very dark gray or black?

This is the closest thing I could find in a quick search:

I agree that you need a nightstand of the same style as the bed. Maybe you should shop second hand or antiques. If you add a lamp on top, the total measurement should be 58-64" above the floor.

I like to look at a room as a whole and don’t feel there is a connection: bed is traditional, nightstand modern, with bedding and art having a Floridian feel.

The most important influence is the bed, so I’d start there.

White traditional nightstand, to lighten the room and wood and will also complement bedding. Be sure it’s the right size and you could even look second hand, just paint and update hardware if necessary.

For a more inviting bed, I’d turn down your comforter, add a white coverlet and colorful cushions for a great look; traditional, but in a modern way.

I can see brass as being complementary and look for a set of botantical prints.

We are in Florida. I’m concerned that white will possibly be too stark a contrast. I can find tons in the over $1000 category. Trying to stay below that for 2 tables.

I don't think the nightstand is quite right. More importantly, I think the bed spread isn't right either and, for you right now, it is influencing your choice of a side table.

I'd like to see something in raffia. Neutral, but relates to the headboard.

Lamp decision yet? natural material seems to go... or any antiqued finishes?

Do you like aqua with green usually? you could have green lamp.

Or this 'blood orange' is ok, and with mahogany's reddish -

depends if you want sheen, seagrass, or earthy --

@judianna20 - I like the raffia - can you provide a link or trail? I was thinking about that type of color - tan or perhaps driftwood (silver tan). Mahogany is red so color wheel points to green as opposite but other suggestions I found online are light gray or light blue. Not a big fan of gray but a driftwood is a nice compromise. The bedding is a simple Florida look and it works with the Mahogany. Not styled at this time, just thrown on to see suggestions. I usually keep it under a dust cover until company comes. ;)

If you find white too stark, cream would feel softer and try Wayfair for decent prices.

How about a lamp like I posted? might make stand easier since 'natural' is always more casual.

With a faded, prewashed linen pillow, etc....

www.etsy.com sells them for low price.

Yes, but it is a 2-part look.... do you have a lamp to post for houzzers to see? even a possibility...

what about the tables I posted? :)

Ker9, are you looking for one nightstand only? Do you prefer/need it to have storage drawers like a chest or is one drawer ok ? May we see what is on the other side of the bed , or is there nothing there with which it needs to co - ordinate? FYI , there are many furniture leg “ extenders “ on line. That might be something to consider for the green piece you have. Personally, I think you can certainly mix a more contemporary piece with your bed style. It would be more effective ,imo, to do that with two nightstands - although one might work, too.

This is a tiny bit over budget...$594 each but some sites give you 10% coupon for signing up for their email...not sure of Ballard..but I think they have sales:

    Ballard

They have a couple of nice blue and ivory colored ones - this comes in cream, too.

    This one is from Wayfair:

@niccidhg - thank you. It would be for 2 nightstands and there is nothing on the other side. I need something that goes with the bed, regardless of what bedding I choose or how I dress it. I was not aware of leg extenders. I do not have the green nightstand, only considering it. I've been looking off and on for 10 years! (It used to be our main bed until we switched to a king.)

It is a guest room, so tables would be ok; drawers not required but nice to have.

I like this one posted by Maureen in ivory especially for a spare room and you can not go wrong with the $265 price tag however the reviews make me double think that exact one. Find something similar but better quality. Ardaghmore 30'' Tall 2 - Drawer Nightstand

At 30" tall, it's too tall. I don't think we can go much beyond 24-25 at max. height based on mattress height, which is 19" now but may go to 21 if I add a 2" topper.

@niccidhg - I was leaning to navy as being more neutral than green and more accessible long term. I like what you posted.

    last modified: 4 years ago

You didn't answer me, but I'll post another opinion -- that a large headboard imo needs a similarly chunk/large nightstand. I don't think opaque navy suits, esp. with your art.... that's why I suggested a chalky, or aged look.

I keep going back to the green but adding legs, perhaps clear acrylic with gold tips on amazon. I thought I might go to west elm this weekend and look at their white & raffia nightstand. As for lamps, I’m one step at a time.

just repeating kandrew's thought that bed reads traditional... It's hard to picture both the clear and gold...I wouldn't pick too delicate or too beachy... but I hope it works there!

    last modified: 4 years ago

The headboard curves, I don’t see it as chunky. I agree not too beachy. It’s difficult to find something that plays nice with the red mahogany.
