Replacement Windows

last modified: 4 years ago

The house is 26 years old and in Utah climate. The windows are builder grade. I have seals broke with condensation or a crack in the glass on another. Being one issue is in the bedroom above the garage if I make changes to old style of grids or make non grids I will have to do both rooms so they are all cohesive to the eye. I would like to update them as much as possible to be more modern but have no idea on what to choose to the style of this house. Would like it to look as timeless as possible but being retired can't make major changes to structure of house. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Inside view of windows in playroom above garage. Below windows there's a window seat/storage. Need advice on window coverings also would be appreciated.

I would not change the style of the grids.

I am not fond of the 1/2 round windows . or the difference in height between them and the flanking windows. For me there is to much going on up there. Hopefully some of the the designers and architechs here chime in .

Wow who knew there was a larger window seat in the alcove???

I'd at least try to get the angled windows to end in line with the arched top window.

I'd prob enlarge those two upper windows and remove the arch. (or, get the arch squared off, whichever option is cheaper)

Similar home. look at the windows.

BTW, look at the composite shake shingle around the upper potion. if and when you can swing it, that might look good on yours on the second story. doing a darker color instead of white might also look nice.

heres a shot to show you how the shake and siding in the same color work together

siding w/shake in the gable portion. windows squared off w/nice, large trim. you could try this

board and batten is another option.

I photoshopped the window and removed the arch. I also gave you a gray garage door.

But I think I may like this one better. goes w/the metal roof. it's SW Tricorn Black. (diff garage door style) also gave you bigger lights that show up against the brick.

you could try getting some carriage hardware for the garage door.

If the arched window is eliminated then you end up with this inside.

maybe replacing it w/something like this would look better

I like less clutter in the grids or no grids at all...if that looks okay to your eye.

Judianna20 - I love that garage door idea. Another possibility we've been pondering is painting the brick. I'm not fond of the color and I do like the idea of a wood look on the garage or possibly black but not sure up against the brick color as it is...

As far as the window shapes we are not going to be able to change that. I'm trying to figure out what replacement window that will fit in the exact shape it is. I'd also love to do shake up there too but can't it's just not in the budget.

Now it's save the arch windows or close them up. Grids or no Grids. And black or white windows. I love black that would help them disappear more but the rest of the house is white windows.

I've tried to put a rod to hang curtains above the arch but the window goes higher in the middle and the rod needs to be able to go a few inches higher that it allows. About 3 inches of the top of the window would'nt have curtains.

There are drapery rods that have elbows that permit you to add a curtain to a bay window. (Given your window seat, you wouldn’t use draperies.). Your Venetian blinds seem to do a good job of controlling light on the lower windows. There are custom shades and shutter options available for arched windows, too. Just Google “window coverings for arched windows” and a number of them will appear.

Yes, I’m aware of the rods with elbows as I’ve had those in years ago. This time I thought I’d try to install to cover the arch also but the curved ceiling doesn’t allow for it to cover high enough.

The curtains really don’t serve a purpose and are just to messy looking. I hoped they would help to insulate but don’t really serve the purpose not totally covering

I need your opinions doing awnings over the moon windows. That would alleviate any construction on the face of the house but cover the majority of the moon portion.

Beverly is on the money. Your Palladian/Federal style windows don't go with your house, which isn't Federal style. I'm not sure what it is, but modernizing by removing the top of the Palladian window and the grids would help. Con: you would lose lots of lovely light.
