Need help finishing dining room!

last modified: 4 years ago

The dark floors and dark table are throwing me off for chair selection.

I can't decide on chairs or if I should put a rug under the table to break up the dark more?

Any other opinions welcome. Paint looks yellow in photo because it's night time here but color is Balanced Beige SW.

Thank you!

Thanks! I can absolutely add better drapes. That is a good suggestion. I normally have a large lemon tree in the corner across from the wine but it's outside with nice weather currently! I do have an extra large fiddle leaf though so I'll move that over to take up some corner space.

I definitely think a lighter area rug that picks up some colours in your pretty wall art and some white fabric chairs would compliment the room nicely. Additionally I'd add some heavier fabric curtains in white. Finished off with some nice greenery or flowers on the table and maybe a tall plant on each side of the window would pull it together nicely. Hope that helps!

I like the table and bench I would change sides and put your new chairs on the current bench side. Can I suggest the art work be seperated by a few more inches between each piece, new heavier feeling curtains (too balance with the table), perhaps relocate the side table to a different area ( i don't care for how it competes with the lower wall detail). When shoping for chairs I would see if you could pick up on a strong texture - perhaps in the same shade as new drapery panels in a heavy linen texture.

Are there any chairs you've considered, to show us?

Personally, I'd find it harder with structured/ dressed up chair rail/ trim, with rustic look. If console were placed elsewhere, it'd look better imo.

I was struck with the juxtaposition of rustic furniture vs. a formal room and delicate light fixture.

@littlebug zone 5 Missouri like what kind of table? we moved this table from other house so it's not out of the question to get another one. I think it'd be more helpful if your comment contained some help vs. just condescension. I post on here valuing opinions so if you have any I am open to hearing them. We're working on changing out furniture and redoing spaces as needed but I didn't want to sell anything until I got everything over and saw how it looked.

@everdebz I was thinking something like this https://www.potterybarn.com/products/milan-slope-upholstered-dining-chair/?pkey=s~dining%20chair~213

we are open to a new dining table too. Like I said above, it was moved from previous house.

Do you think something like this setup would fit better?

In middle of the process, I think it's best to see more of the area- is there a bit rustic at all, or more traditional? I like your floor and table set, btw, and the light is interesting - and shows 'lines' mostly straight? of light, table legs, curtain rod, wine racks, chair rail.

Might that be a part reason for wanting upholstery to soften the angles? [or do you like contemporary 'lines'?]

Subtle warm, called auburn - if night lighting has a 'glow' this might be nice, and with the chairs you posted. Without nailheads could be more versatile, and better with modern chandelier.

Not too 'dressy' with thin stripes...with solid rug?

@everdebz Yes I mostly just feel like everything feels heavy. That's why we went with this light. We tried chandeliers but it made it look more heavy so I wanted something with dimension and interest but didn't feel like it took up a lot of space.

I could do a table with less bulky looking like the photo I posted, I wonder if that would help it some. With a rug underneath and heavier textured chairs.

I don't see a lot of dark flooring staged photos so it's hard for me to picture how things will look against that.

I was looking for basic Parson shape - possible with the table?

I like legs with 'reclaimed finish' more casual.

Oh ok... I could see a table with straight legs and maybe with similar 'reclaimed' look, but not actually old wood.

This is the color chair I had in there. We got rid of these after moving because I didn't like the leg color.

@everdebz Yes, I like that one! I think that may help tie in the rustic with the chair rails too. Thank you.

I would consider heavier, textured ivory drapery panels, and ivory upholstered chairs, with a large light (ivory) area rug… maybe remove the side table, lower the wine racks a few inches, and add 2” between artwork. Warm it up with floor plants on either side of window… and perhaps lower chandelier a bit?

If this is your daily dining area, I wouldn't use a rug- will be hard to move the bench out for seating (chairs too but they are a little easier depending on rug pile). I think benches are much nicer in concept than practical if you have adults sitting in those areas. Is adjoining areas more transitional/traditional or more rustic. The table and bench look well-made, but they don't seem to quite fit with the more formal walls. BUT, if keeping, I like the simple upholstered cream/linen chairs.

    Here's quite the pattern, idea:.

The soft blue pretty, and with art. Too bad the legs couldn't get a minwax toward brown- "country black."

I'd paint the wall part below the railing also white, instead of it looking like blank picture frames.

Your table is pretty. A table runner and flowers are an easy way to lighten things up. For chairs, I agree with others that upholstered ones would soften things up and your u could try to find ones with legs that match your table’s legs. Maybe velvet chairs with an open back?

I was not being condescending nor critical at all when commenting on the differing styles of the room itself and the table/bench. No where did I say it was a bad thing.

I see several articles online addressing the mixing of elegant and rustic features in interior design.
