Fun topic, Paula! 25 potted hostas are in the crawl space under our house because their pips were already unfurling leaves. We had a cold snap to 21 degrees night before last, and 29 last night.

Snow today. a warm surge coming. 50s later in the week.

This is not all of my garden but most of my Hostas are on this side. Still about 3 ft. of snow.

Well since you asked. Personally, I'm glad my place doesn't look like UToG's yet. Way too early.

Here is the hosta future home. I drop the frame in the winter to maintain heat and I will raise it back up but leave off the plastic leaving the shade screen. I bought this hosta in December, and he already likes it in here. I will get good morning sun and shade from 1pm on. Excuse the mess I have not even started in there yet.

Hostas saved from the frost this weekend by bringing into the crawl space. Fire Island is opening and was saved, too.

The unlucky ones suffered serious frost bite. I pinched off the top 50 % of First Love’s and Chodai Ginyo’s pips. Wolverine and others show damage. Sadly and predictably, Montana aureomarginata has taken damage. I couldn’t cover them due to 30 mph winds and 15 hours of sudden temperatures in 20’s, flanked by 60 degree temperatures within each end of the frost. Hydrangeas are very damaged. So, be careful what you wish for. That said, winter temperatures will be gone here in 3 weeks.

Two spots in back yard where most of my Hostas & Fuchsias live.. Some pips are just peeking up since we had a string of days in high 50's. That ugly white string on trellis is what I rigged up last year to contain Clematis vines & it was completely covered so won't be an eyesore for long. The iron trellis is too open to support much. I'm in Vancouver, WA Zone 8. Paula, I have been so entertained by your cartoons & posts! Thank you!

Invariably the first one for me to break ground and unfurl, clausa var. normalis. Though not visible in this shot, there was a shoot coming out of one of the drain holes. That prompted me to slide the whole plant out of the pot and in the process I ended up with about half a dozen runners that were potted up 3 to a gallon pot of their own. Not far behind will be 'Chinese Sunrise' and I saw yesterday my 'First Blush' is going gangbusters as well.

Utog, sorry about your freeze….. I had a late freeze last year and went crazy trying to protect plants, but I still had damage. They will recover. 👍🏽👍🏽

Thanks, Debra. It will be OK. Ah, the excitement and drama of early spring. My hydrangeas were all unfurling their leaves and promised to have good flower buds, weather pending. Weather ended that, hard-freezing all of the growth tips on all of them and leaving brown, stewed cabbage in their place. I doubt I will have any purple mophead flowers this year, but several of the lacecaps can bloom on new wood. Nothing to have done for it. Low temps of 21-22 degrees for 12+ hours can not be deflected with sheets or inverted barrels/pots of oak leaves. That duration of bitter cold is unstoppable. For me, the drapes and covers can reduce damage for 1-4 hours of light freeze, especially if the weather around the freeze huddles in the mid-30’s to lower 40’s. 60 to 21 to 63 degrees over 48 hours is deadly to tender perennials. I shared some hellebore photos from today because they seemed to respond to cold, crazy weather quite favorably.

Sun here too…..but last week nights were in the teens still. Today is 40F, tomorrow it’s supposed to be 60F, I won’t hold my breath though!
I have a couple things poking up but otherwise everything is brown, brown, brown!

houzz has a jump up button, but no jump down button.

this will probably be a long thread. unless its broken up.

my solution to scrolling is to use a bookmark that jumps down via javascript.

can't gurantee it works on all platforms.

create a new bookmark call it bottom.

edit the url and paste/replace it with this javascript. ...save it and it should jump to the bottom of the page when clicked within a page.

That sounds like a neat trick but above my patience level 😉 I just use the ’Sort by’ function & sort by newest. I do usually scroll down a few posts to make sure I’ve read them all.

a Walmart distribution center in nearby Plainfield IN had a massive fire..amazingly no one was hurt..now Indy has ash everywhere..some pics from my driveway and yard..

I wore latex surgical gloves..grabbed a plastic produce bag and collected some of it..

clumps of daffodils coming up..my sedums could be growing like debra's..but they're covered with leaves and I let them be..too busy picking up pieces of ash and clipping hellebores..

it's interesting to see the differences of everyone's gardens..everything from growing hosta to snow..I was surprised that steve had bits of snow..mine disappeared awhile ago..

I am late with this one. We have been travelling, of course to warmer places. Came home yesterday. So I can add a picture. Not too much going on here. Seeing some crocus starting to show themselves, not blooming yet. Nice to see some green in the warmer area's gardens.

today was so wet I didn't go out..forsythia are blooming..shrubs have buds..saw new growth at the base when I removed ratty epimedium leaves Monday..unfortunately we have 2 more days of rain 🙁..

NW, thank you. Lots of plants are pipping. It is so encouraging. Winter will end. We have rain tomorrow, too.

March 24, 2022 IL/WI near Lake Michigan

Couple weeks late posting, but there's really been no change in my hosta garden since then to now. These were taken today.

taken today 3-28..Clausa pips with dried mud..easier to see in person than in this pic..I'm not going to cover them..they have some cold days ahead..I didn't look everywhere but I didn't notice any other pips..

These were shot earlier this afternoon. I tried to post this with the original picture on my phone and while it appeared as if it had taken the picture as part of the post when I hit 'submit' I never saw the actual picture and deleted the post. I have now taken the picture and down-sized on my 'puter and I'm trying again....It's not as if this is the first time I've ever posted an image..

Pieter..you described exactly what happened to me a few hours ago..I tried twice (not this post) then gave up..deleted the text portion both times..

on this post the pic posted..I have no explanation 🤷‍♀️..
