transitory color changes should be normal for this plant ..

frankly.. these should be so carefree.. you could probably throw them on the driveway for the rest of summer... and replant in fall... and they would do just fine ...

dont worry about them.. and dont love them to death ...

if you could post a pic.. we could tell you if its out of range of normal.. but im betting not ....

i dont water mine at all in my sand ... so its not a watering issue .... unless you are over watering them in non draining soil ...

Are you growing them indoors or outside? I grow outdoor ones in the ground here in the chill of MI, so outdoor ones normally change color with the temps. I also grow some indoor/tropical succulents in pots that look a lot like the outdoor ones, but aren't the same plant. Those I take in and out during the summer/winter so they don't get hit with temp changes like the outdoor ones. I would have concern if those suddenly started changing color without good reason. Like I screwed up and took them in/out too early/late.

I've seen it sometimes in big box stores where indoor stuff is mixed with outdoor stuff and it's all kind of labeled the same, and sometimes hens and chicks tags will be on stuff I know isn't. Sometimes it's marked succulents, but in the mix are some that shouldn't stay outside in my zone along with hardy outdoor stuff. So there might be a chance that though you think it's hens and chicks, it's not.

Hens and chicks typically refers to Sempervivum tectorum (and a few other S. species). These are incredible tough and hardy garden succulents and do not necessarily appreciate being grown indoors. They come in a wide range of colors and tonal qualities and red is quite common.

As long as the drainage is good, these will really prefer to be grown outside. And will develop the best color when exposed to direct sunlight.

Otherwise, everyone is guessing...unfortunately, many common names are often used for different plants so to see the plants in question helps...it is like askig for diagnose without seeing the patient+ having very little info...
