Mislead Shipping Dates

last modified: 4 years ago

I'm somewhat new to mail order plants.

Everything I have ordered was shipped @ time of order or at least had a request of when to ship for the less than a handful of orders I've done. On one order, I even asked and received a real pic of what I was buying...not the product marketing pic.

For the 2022 order of BR, I did a call last week - asking for them to be released anytime that week if possible. Was told it's *special shipping*, which they only do Mondays. I didn't get a shipping confirmation yesterday nor did my UPS/FedEx alerts letting me know I get a inbound package.

So... a Follow-Up call was placed today. Same rep whom I spoke with last Tuesday. She kindly advised it was scheduled to go out the 28th. I pointed out that we spoke last last week and was clear when she said while be released for next Monday - Since it's special shipping, and couldn't be released T-Friday ......but it would be released to be shipped the following Monday. I presume maybe they ONLY ship on Mondays so that it may minimize the time in transit.

Anyhow, do you guys feel like you need to -keep ontop- of your mail orders to make sure they are not shipping based on the zone calendar but what your ambient temperature is where you live.

I think it's a lot to expect a nursery that processes and ships goodness knows how many orders to keep track of the ambient temperature of any given place. I can hardly blame them for defaulting to zone maps or other generalized ways of determining shipping dates. I have ordered clems from a nursery that only ships to certain parts of the country on Mondays to prevent anything from sitting extra time over the weekend when the USPS won't/might not deliver them. I don't feel like I need to stay on top of it. Many places are pretty transparent about their shipping policies and I always read them ahead of time.

I hear ya, not on zone but ambient temp delivery schedules. Just need to get on my soapbox, on what I was clear on a ship date that was verbally confirmed only to now wait another week and hoping it actually releases as stated. The plan this time is a follow-call on Friday to confirm if that Monday has not shifted again

Can't speak for USPS, but while there is lesser movement in the Hubs, FedEx and UPS Ground deliver 7 days a week these days.

Lots of places only ship on Mondays. For reasons mentioned above. Has always been that way. And your local ambient temperature isn't as important as the temperature along the delivery path.

Yes, I get things may freeze during transit. But from X to Y.....freezing is long gone. And I ship enough to know that even if it had shipped Tuesday, it would have been delivered Friday or Saturday. But to mitigate all risks, I get Monday is the safest day to do it

They are the ones that are on the hook to replace plants on their dime if a plant arrives dead or severely dried out. They probably just were quite busy and were unable to actually send it on Monday, and rather than ship later in the week and risk a stalled shipment that would possibly make them liable to replace the plant, they opted to wait until the following Monday. And I honestly agree with that choice.

I just let the company ship when they do- they know better than I how/when to ship their product, what their logistics are. They are indeed on the hook for problems. And sometimes delivery trucks don't get completly unloaded/arrive on time, and then your plants sits extra overnight. I've run into this issue rarely over the summer with food deliveries and sometmes the extra day does make a difference. Same goes for spring shipments of plants when the extra day sitting/transit can make a difference. Maybe not so much farther south, but for sure still up north. Even though there aren't a lot of freezing overnight temps in a row, they are still happening and a lot of hard frost and below fridge temps even into the day are still going on.

I don't know where the OP is or the company they ordered from is. So it might all be south enough. But I do hope they get their plants in a timely manner and good health.
