Would a smaller mirror with two side lights work? There might be many more options and the lights would be like jewelry for the space.

I did think about that as well. But do side lights give off enough light to apply makeup and for my husband to shave? I’ve never been in someone‘s bathroom that had those.

Two sconces on either side of a mirror provide better lighting than a light over the mirror for grooming. The light should be roughly eye level. Depending on how large your bathroom is you may also want a ceiling light. I always use a semi-flush light which provides nice general illumination for the room. Some people use recessed lighting in the ceiling. Put all of your lights on a dimmer switch for maximum flexibility.

Consider a 24-32" mirror for the space. I suppose some folks like extra lights above the vanity because perhaps the room is lacking with other light options. If you have adequate ceiling lights then for vanity area consider the sconce lighting on each side of the mirror, it is a better light for grooming at the mirror than having the shadows from overhead vanity lights. Proper lightbulbs will help too. Use dimmer switches if you prefer control of brightness.
