Can this Sofa be saved?

last modified: 4 years ago

For the record, we love this sofa,- it is plushy, soft, and everyones go to in our living room.

However we had a beige and brown living room in our previous home and this living room is a lot more grey and blue- making it stick out.

The cushions arent removable so I am trying to find other ways of upgrading this sofa- are there any slipcovers that might work?

below are two pictuess, one of the sofa and the second is of the room which is a MAJOR work in progress (apologies for the mess)

includes painting

the brown bookshelves white, and moving all of the kiddie stuff into storage/giving away

It's $521. It might be cheaper to buy a new one than getting it reupholstered. If the original one is in good condition, you might be able to sell it on FB marketplace.

But a brown couch can be rather neutral so you might get it to work. Show us a pic of the room overall so we can help.

I see your room photo now. At first glance, it looks like almost too much furniture in the room. I know you said it’s a work in progress. I’d take the brown couch out of the room and play around with rotating the sectional (at least I think that’s a sectional) to under the window where the brown couch is now. Turn the beige chair on an angle in the corner near the left shelf piece. This would allow you to move the tv to the long wall, placing a nice low console beneath it. You can bring in blues and greys with pillows, artwork — larger rather than lots of smaller pieces — and even an area rug on top of the carpet. Lots of options.

That seems to be a LOT of furniture for a relatively small space.

Why do you need all that seating? You have a sectional plus a recliner plus the brown sofa. All of these pieces are relatively *large* pieces nor do they seem to tie in with each other. There are three shades of brown - perhaps I am being obtuse but the only blue I see are some sheer curtains in the background.

How do you want the room to function. I am assuming you watch television in there so that seating is placed so that one can view the television on the sectional and the recliner. The brown loveseat doesn't face the television screen and - at least in my experience - two seaters aren't good for lying down because they are too short.

The coffee table also doesn't seem to provide functionality to any of the seating areas.

There are lots of "decorative" elements that can be brought into a room - pillows, throws, rugs but I think you need to figure out how you want the space to function and how to configure seating before you concentrate on "styling" the room.

The walls are too yellowish. Paint the whole room off-white or beige with a neutral undertone. Can the carpet be replaced with wood or LVP? Also consider painting those dark cabinets white to match the fireplace.

I think shades of teal and/or navy tie in nicely with browns. This room below has brown and taupe furniture and they offset it with teal. You don't have to be so bold as to paint your walls this color, but consider adding it in with accessories, such as bold blue curtains and throw pillows. Consider a huge area rug that has blues and browns to tie it all together.

@Lynzy the furniture does seem like a lot but sadly it isnt, we have family and friends over on a regular basis and all of these seats get taken up by them, we do need the brown bookshelves, but I am willing to replace them with floating ones to make them look better.

@Helen we have friends and family over on a weekly basis and all of these pieces are used up by them, so getting rid of any of them will make the gatherings a lot harder to manage.

I can get rid of the angular tables for something for functional (and flows better), what would you suggest?

@User I do love the idea of painting the wall blue! what shade is that?

We are planning on painting the bookshelves white. Removing the carpeting is in the works but that is several years out, since we have a lot of other little projects to do, and have another baby on the way so it isn't feasible at this time

I appreciate your need for seating but I am not sure that the current configuration achieves that end in terms of maximizing your space without making it feel overcrowded.

A sectional doesn't seat that many people comfortably because people don't like to seat in the corner and part of it is backless so not great seating. A loveseat is also not that best for seating lots of people within a space because you are limited to two people and - again - many people prefer not to be seated next to each other on a loveseat.

Your sectional would appear to seat only four people comfortablly - and in the corner area it might be uncomfortable for two adults because their knees would collide.

In terms of coffee tables given your entertaining needs you would probably be best with nesting tables or sectional tables that can be moved around as needed.

IDK, it's a photo I found on google. But yay that you're going for blue walls! Go to a paint store and start picking out swatches! Tread lightly. I find that blue-green walls need to be a little bit more greyed out than you think. Too bold and it can feel really intense. Look at some softer, paler teals too, just in case. Also, don't do an accent wall.

the trim in these photos is painted, but for your room, I'd recommend keeping your FP and trim white.

Also, congrats on the new baby!

The room needs to be pulled together and you want to keep the brown sofa. Some ideas to do that:

--Keep the sofa since you like it. Go on Etsy and order a handmade throw in turquoise, brown, and tan to put over the sofa back. It'll look great. You don't need slipcovers.

--Get a patterned rug with turquoise, brown, tan with some brown that harmonizes with tan and brown seating. Add pillows in accent blue.

    -

-Paint the room a warm white. Add curtains in the same warm white. Paint your bookcases white.

--Put a large mirror over the sofa on the left side to reflect light from the window. Relocate the little photos and bitsy framed pieces to a hallway, at eye level. I bet you no one even looks at those photos because they're not well places.

--Get junk away from bookcases. Not sure of your measurements, but I would paint the bookcases white and move them side by side to the right of the fireplace. Then I would put TV on a cabinet to left of fireplace and add an art work over the fireplace. Put some birch logs in the fireplace so it's not just a black hole.

----Get great nesting coffee tables that are reachable/movable to all your seating.

--Finish tidying up so nothing is in the room that doesn serve a function in there. In a small living room, a few big pieces, art, mirror, great rug will pull everything together.
