It is always a good practise to copy-paste pictures of pieces onto an "ideaboard", print it out and then go shopping when the discount season is on.
Keep a look out online for specials and clearance sales at major furnishing stores.

I agree the parquet floor really works. Keeping the furniture contemporary will keep it from seeming dated. If you have an ikea near you should check them out for small scale sofas. Cheap art can be made and then replaced later for more expensive pieces. Search for toilet paper roll art and then use your imagination. Also search thrift store for pieces that you like the shape and then spray paint to match your room.
