Sounds about right but good drainage + moisture retention (especially in summer) is key. And not the easiest of plants to establish. I'd stick with those listed on the GPP website.

Ordered a couple of Arisaema consanguineum from Far Reaches, Will report back in a few years. :)

I never was able to get my podophyllum to thrive but I did have a pretty decent planting of arisaemas back in the day in the same general vicinity. This was back in the day when Heronswood was an up and thriving nursery and was the source of much of my old garden. I called it 'Heronswood East' 😁

Your comment about Heronswood had me reminiscing about buying and shopping there and walking the grounds. I'm sad it's no longer selling and in part due to the pandemic haven't been over there to see the gardens in years. Glad we have Far Reaches, they are great people and have some of the best, and most unusual plants. That got me thinking about other specialty nurseries and thought of Naylor Creek. Searched and found the sad news about Gary. Never met either him or Jack and never visited the nursery, but have read enough to know they were good people and will be missed. Placed my first order from them last year in May. While I'd read they were mail order only I inquired if they were up for visitors. He wrote this back,

"I am sorry but we are strictly mail order...its just me (at 79 and my 24 year old helper) as we cannot keep the grounds up...we are overwhelmed with orders this year at almost 800 and they keep coming...last year we sold almost everything out...we just cannot accommodate visitors."

I hope someone buys the nursery and can keep it going. Sad to see these gems disappearing.

Heronswood is just a quick drive away from me and before the pandemic, I visited often on their open days. They always had a really nice selection of local specialty nursery vendors selling their wares and I rarely left one of these open days without a purchase or two. Same with Far Reaches....a bit longer drive but only by about a half hour.

Naylor Creek is midway between the two, so also an easy drive. And back before mail order took over the world, one could visit the nursery. I recall Jack and Gary giving my ex and I a guided tour of the nursery and allowing us to pick out what we wanted. In those days is was not just hostas but lots of other shade plants as well, as I recall buying a bunch of epimediums at that time.

I haven't visited Heronswood very recently due to Covid and no open days for the last couple of years. But the gardens were being very well maintained and new plants were being added. Dan still acts in an advisory capacity for the S'Klallum tribe and supervises most of the renovations. And they will be having plant sales again this season!! April 30 and May 1 !! I plan on being there. (They also offer great classes)
