Shade is one thing, north facing wall shade is another. I think you'd have a more rewarding outcome planting plants that actually thrive in shade.

Some roses grow and bloom in partial sun, but I don't know of any which would do that in a place which is so shady that iris will not bloom. Does the area you are talking about get ANY direct sun? If not, it is probably not a place where roses would be happy. There are lots of flowering plants which like shade - if I were you, I would look into that. I would consult the closest Garden club near you, and ask about shade gardens, and what kinds of shade plants do well in your area (it is VERY important to get local advice). Shade gardens can be beautiful and have flowers.

In almost complete shade, camellias did well for me, maybe you can try that? I don't think roses would do well.

No rose is shade happy, and I can think of none of mine that would do well in it. Even part shade is challenging here. Diane

What State you are in would help too. Location is more than zone.

I hate to be discouraging but I have tried to push several roses to do well in 3 hours of direct hot sunlight and they fail. Irises here bloom very well in 3 hours of full sun. If your wall is that shady you need to try something else. I have camelias japonicas on my north wall and they do well.

In a shady bed, I’d plant a bed of Christmas roses (Hellebores). They are not true roses, of course, but they would be much happier. i would find trying to grow roses against a shady north wall to be an exercise in frustration that i would rather avoid.

shade lovers in my zone 7. I have cast iron plant (they come in more varieties than just green), acuba, solomons seal, hellebores, fatsia, hostas, heucheras, camellias (the fall/winter rose)., ferns.. and the list goes on. I have hydrangeas on the north side under a maple and they do not like it. they stretch for more light so I would not plant hydrangeas unless they can get more sun. you can create beauty in the shade, just have to be creative with texture and variegation.

@Mamaham_NC_Zone7 do your ferns survive winter and return each year?

Thats the only reason i havent planted any yet.
