Backsplash Dilemma

Installing 3x6 white subway tiles in a few weeks and I have 2 questions:

1. Do I tile all the way to the corner? (Left side picture)

2. On the blank wall, I'm putting 2 floating shelves. Do I tile all the way to the red line or go all the way up to the blue line?

Open also to other inputs. Thanks!

    1. Yes to taking the backsplash around that left corner. Especially since that looks like where your stove will be. It will make cleaning any splatters much easier.

    2. Also yes to taking the tile up higher. In my opinion, I think it will make your floating shelves look nice and it will make a lovely statement.

    Good luck!

Because it looks like you'll have a cooktop on the left, you'll want to extend the tile to the edge of the upper cab, but no further.

If you take the tile higher, take it to 2/3s of the way up the window, not level with the top of the window.

I would take the tile up to the bottom of the first shelf, or bottom of the second shelf. Not sure how the red and blue lines correspond to the shelf placement.

@ali412, yes my range is installed on that side. It's 18 inches away from the wsll

What do you mean by 2/3s up? @daisychain Zn3b

If you are 18" from the side wall with the range it's not really necessary to do a side splash. If you are putting the floating shelf even with the bottom of the cabinets, I would stop it at the bottom of the lower shelf aligned with the bottom of the other cabinets.

I would not go to the top of the window because it's not quite lined up with the top of the cabinets. You don't want to create a bunch of different horizontals here.

@palimpsest the first floating shelf is aligned with the bottom of the cabinets. The original plan is to tile up to the bottom of the first shelf/aligned with the bottom of the other cabinets. The other option is to tile all the way up, aligned to the top of the cabinet. This idea was brought up by the tile store. That got us thinking a little bit.

I added a picture. I think if you tile up to the top of the cabinet you will have a sliver of tile over the window. I assume something is going underneath the floating shelves along the right?

@palimpsest A dishwasher and another cabinet will be installed underneath it. The counter will go all the way to the trim of the door.

I understand what you are saying with regards to the sliver of tile over the window. Will this still be an issue if we add a window trim? Something similar to the below picture. The 2 brown lines represents the floating shelves.

No, if you add trim you could do it so you did not have a sliver of tile over the window. I am still not sure that I would tile to the top of the window though.

Tile up to the bottom of the lowest shelf. If you're range is 18" from the wall, don't tile the left wall at all. Only put tile on the window wall up to the bottom of the lowest shelf.
