You need a professional designer for a house that nice! Doug has answered quite a few dilemmas and his designs are really nice.

Nice house! don't give up on river rock -- rounded stones come in various sizes and color blends and there is likely a choice that works for you. To get meaningful landscape suggestions people need to know your growing zone (naming a large nearby city is sufficient), also a picture of your full house and side/front yard.

My own preference is loose/natural/native and low maintenance, but it's always interesting to see other people's choices.

IMO not a homey type house so be careful how the landscaping is done to suit the house.I would maybe look at pea gravel and larger boulder type rock. Sort of similar to this idea. We did our lawer part of our back yard in pea gravel last year kept some plantings but no grass and I love it it requires a lot less water than before and I don't need to spend my days weeding. I used big planters along the walkway and at the entry to the yard.
