Snow mixed with rain?

That is what the weather report is sayinng. Hope they are wrong. We enjoyed 80's and 70's most of last week. All daylilies except those in the pots are growing great as well as the perennials I planted last year. I dug out the ones in the pots and those are mush. I assume the storm we had with the snow, sleet and then rain did them in. Life as a gardener is never easy, eh?.

Spent yesterday digging out the two dead trees we had planted last year and found a lot of grubs in the soil. Yuck. I wondered if they came in with the root balls. We have 5 more trees coming this week so will need to talk with the nursery about what we can do to deter those buggers.

More moderate temps rebounding by Wednesday so hopefully to get some other projects done outside.

Julia - So sorry to see you lost the daylilies in pots. The potted ones are always at risk during wet winters and early springs. I probably have enough fans of those that I replace them for you. I had some seedlings I planted late in October in a raised bed, and they looked great all winter, only to have about third of them disappear about three weeks ago.

Chilly here today, might get some rain, but no snow at least. But then, I don't think we have hit 80 yet either. That is predicted starting Wed. 31 deg tonight. Jackets one day and tee shirts the next. I am sorry you lost the potted plants. What did you lose?

Debra: Thank you for the offer.

Well we are getting snow which has already covred everything. still snowing now. At least it isn't ice.

- OMgosh. Snow. I had hoped we had all passed that by now in the warmer zones. Sorry about your daylilies in pots too. I lost a few Sevs/Evs again. Still others did fine, so it is not a hard and fast rule that only dormants will survive pot culture over winter in our zones. I do know they need excellent drainage over winter; almost a quasi cactus and succulent mix......Sorry about the tree situation. I always hated it when we lost a tree. Debra should be our resident expert on grub control..............Maryl

Julia - I'm surprised Neon Flamingo, a hard dormant, turned to mush, but I'm not as surprised about the other two. I have lost a couple of dormants in pots over the years. As for grubs, the best product would be one with the bacteria BT like Grub Gone! since it kills grubs of All white beetles. Grub Ex and Milky Spore only target grubs of Japanese beetles and do nothing at all to the grubs of June bugs and Chafer beetles. Also Grub Ex doesn't kill the beetles unless they are in their earliest stages and even then, they must eat some of the roots of your precious plants to get the poison.

Debra: Neon Flamingo was one of the first ones in the pots to start growing this spring however after the prior snowstorm we had with the sleet/freezing rain and big drop in temps it disappeared. No animals got it and when I dug it out of the pot the whole root system is mush. When Kay sent her plants I put them in the ground and those have come up great. I think I should have put these in as well but as you know I was trying to keep them away from the other plants until after winter. I did a mix of garden soil and potting mix. We have had many rain storms here so maybe the soil got too wet.

Thanks for the info on the products for the grubs. I've never seen so many when I dug the dead trees out.

Snow melting quickly but still a bit chilly here. The only plant blooming here is the Bleeding Heart one of my neighbors gave us when we moved in last year.

I hate that! Losing plants is no fun at all. I am glad the ones I sent are doing okay.
