First measure your windows to see if you can shop for ready made curtains. If you don't have standard windows you will probably have to have them custom made.

Next most everyone will tell you they should be installed almost to the ceiling which adds more material.

Third decide if you want curtains, blinds, shutters, etc. What are your needs? Privacy? Warmth? Purely decorative?

Lastly photos of the windows with curtains open would be helpful.

I don't think I will be able to talk my husband into moving the rods up lol. I have some vintage velvet curtains arriving today...we shall see.

The trim is not the proper place to mount a rod. It should be on the wall and extended out a bit so the curtains can open farther out. If you can't move the rod, then you're better off to get curtains the same color as the trim, so it blends in better rather than stand out. Any other color will probably not make a difference in the look that's there now.

Do you need to have the windows covered during the daylight hours? i greatly prefer natural light whenever possible. Therefore , I would opt for grommet top panels in a very neutral color. You want to make sure that you have enough panels to allow some fullness when they are closed. i would guess that you need at least 6 panels for the larger window.

Another option could be a pleated shade at each window with panels on the ends only. It really is personal preference.

The dark curtains that are there now are getting returned.  I have cyan yellow and silver coming. And have considered setting another rod to do sheer against the window and the actual curtains out a bit  I may just decide to return the new ones arriving today also and get the 108in ones instead of the 84 in ones.  So that I can mount them higher.  Thank you for the insight.  Working full time with a 1yr old  doesn't leave alone of time for decorating and I never know what it will look like until it arrives

Your room looks so much nicer without curtains. I’d invest in nicer shades— custom sized for the windows.

Well custom isn't easy.  We rent this apt.  I am going to try some more options.  Silver was a no go....matched the walls exactly...sending everything back and starting over

Keep in mind …you have a “curtain climber”…this can lead to all kinds of mishaps ..maybe just consider a valance for color/decor?..it is hard to tell but it appears you will need the blinds closed most of the time for privacy?…they can be adjusted for day time light but may need to be completely closed at nite?

We live right on the street, but about 12 ft up, I don't think we need to worry too much about people looking in. But we do have to look at them when they walk by. We want to be able to close off the light when we watch tv in the daytime, but keep the option to have let the daylight in without exposing the blinds or having the windows totally open
