What is the vent in the shower? Is the crack close to it?

No way and if this is an old house often just too much movement in the flooring to do a cement base and I always use a premade shower base in those cases.

Hello Liz. The vent is an air intake for my ventilation system. That was covered with new backerboard when the reno was done. The crack is not close to it.

What are you doing now for an air intake vent? What did they use for waterproofing as I see none in that niche?

Didn't really ask about the air intake or the niche, but the air intake is on the other side of the wall, and they use redguard (sp?) for the niche.

Hi. I notice this thread is from 2022. My penny tile shower has the same issues. If you don’t mind me asking :What was the end result? We called the installer and no showed… Thank you.

Only fix if you have the exact same issue is tear out and do over. Please tell us how yours was constructed and maybe pics of the work, in progress if possible.

3 most common issues are

A. CTEC explained it well. Bravo sir.

B. A foam shower base with inadequate density spec was used. True story schluter has reworked their shower bases for just this reason. The old version had no spec for tiles smaller than 2x2 and even then they had issues. many foam pans still dont meet proper density for penny tiles and point loads.

C. RARE but a pan even concrete built on say a slab on grade where the slab itself has Out of plane crack/movement. VERY rare theres also the rare chance a wood build structure has an structural issue..

Most likely installer error especially if A No show ! but who knows
