Ugly Fixer Upper

Any suggestions for this hideous exterior? Paint or smear on brick? What color? Im not crazy about the yellow siding, but is it worth the expense of replacing? New shutters…no shutters? We’ve thought about wood beam posts out front. New roof going up is gray/silver metal. We purchased for a rental, but our home has sold unexpectantly, so looks like this is where we will be for a while! TIA…

What's the siding made of? Maybe it can be painted. The brick is fine. I'd remove the faux shutters, add some nice square posts to the porch and carport on the right, replace the door with one that has glass about the size of the window to the right of it, and replace those pre-poured concrete steps with some nice wide ones with a hand rail.

Thanks, ya’ll. The roof if actually metal. I didnt clarify that earlier. Not sure that would sway your opinions or not. The main reason that I considered painting brick is the addition on the back was built with a different brick. What started out as just a new roof and cosmetics has nightmarishly turned into rebuilding the entire house!

What does the other brick look like? Do they coordinate?

I agree the silver/grey metal roof is going to add another mismatched element, unless you commit to painting the brick which is otherwise quite nice.

I get how things can snowball - stop for a minute to come up with a plan before you randomly start replacing things. I'm not a fan of the yellow either but the shutter color is doing it no favors. 1. Find out if the siding can be painted and if so, if it is worth painting.

    2. Remove the shutters.

    3. Take a picture of the back brick.

Then decide if the grey roof would actually work. This house is a more buttery yellow than yours and it's not great. Know your options and then find pictures of houses with the same combo to see if you like it.

It's tough to comment on the roof without seeing it. However, often slatey blues go well with brick, so that would work well with a gray roof. I'd paint the siding.

I'm not a fan of painting brick. Right now, we can't see the mismatch.

I'd also beef up the columns on the porch and tidy up the edges of the driveway.

This may help. The two different bricks really dont go well together. I know, it’s a hot mess! I am thinking maybe paint the vinyl and brick white to give it a more cohesive appearance.

Its not ugly! It just needs a little shaping. the tin roof is going to be nice. I like the brick, If you painted the siding a sage color it could look really good.

I would do a raised porch with steps to the driveway and car port. larger posts, and add a hanging light.

Landscape will be your biggest helper

In the back I would run the patio the other way.

I agree that a porch would be a big improvement. If it is vinyl siding there is paint for that. I like the sage color that RL Relocation LLC recommended. I would not paint the brick. Even if there is a slight mismatch on the brick it is not noticeable from the front. You have other things to spend your money on now.

I had to put the two photos together to see what concerned you about the brick... Is it just the little part outlined in red that is the issue?

For that section you could use vertical strips of wood (common on MCM houses) or even just a paneled section built out over the brick and maybe painted whatever color siding you choose.

Since the tin roof is happening, I would wait until it is on and take another picture of the house with the new roof. Use a paint program to colorize the siding - the sage green mentioned about might work!

Can you paint vinyl? Maybe better to get new siding, especially if the entire back of the house is brick - probably won't cost much.

Listen to RL Relocation - you're just seeing the backdrop, with landscaping and porches completed it could be very nice.

I would replace the vinyl siding with white siding and paint all the brick white. Wrap the posts being added for porch and carport in natural cedar. Add a classic black or navy front door color. Your trim and windows appear to already be white. The white will be broken up by different textures, instead of several different colors.

I would not do white, judging from the moss and mold growing on the brick you are in a wet area and that brick needs to breath, do not paint it, and white will be hecka lot of militance
